What were the gas / silver / gold prices in that period? If it is $175 a piece, that thing cost a lot back then.

I don't know what inflation was off hand, I DO know that the relative cost of the PST back then in the late 80's was significantly more than in 2000.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

According to the inflation calculator $175 in May 1983 has the same buying power as $434.90 in today's dollars.

The price of an ounce of gold on 5-17-1983 was $440.75, silver was $12.96, a gallon of gas was $1.23, the highest paid major leaguer was Mike Schmidt (Ph NL) at $1,652,333.

If you had invested $175 in the following stocks today that investment would be worth:

3M - $9,225.50
Apple - $39,668.97
Boeing - $16,387.93
Coca Cola - $17,174.07
Disney - $16,486.67
Exxon Mobil - $$9,539.40
Nike - $58,554.56
Pepsi - $17,844.03

Here is the article the pictures were with:

The First Leatherman Tool Ever Sold
By Leatherman · Updated about 5 years ago · Taken at Nürnberg, Germany
At the IWA show in Nürnberg, Germany this past week we were fortunate enough to meet this man, Wolf. On a trip to Eugene, Oregon in 1983, he came across Tim Leatherman selling his tools. Tim said, “In April 1983 I rented a table at the Oregon Knife Collectors Show, showed my handmade prototype, and tried to solicit an order for another. Wolf was the first, and only, to order. I don't consider it a production tool because I made it by hand. As his receipt shows, I sold it for $175. Made the princely sum of about a dollar an hour, which even in those days was about a quarter of the minimum wage!” Thanks, Wolf, for believing in Leatherman multi-tools!

The article is from the Leatherman Facebook page

If I recall, I paid over $100 for my PST in 1984. I think it was somewhere around $139 at Cutlery World. The guy who sold it to me thought it was a cool toy, but would never catch on. LOL! I’ve carried a Leatherman of one incarnation or another since that day, even on my wedding day in 1992.
