Nice idea Mikko but too small a capacity.  I figure one of the real old ones a 120GB 2.5" drive and Rockbox the firmware should be the ticket.

The irony is Ryan that I picked up a broken AV700TV from a car boot sale recently.  Got it working again, great for films... which I have no desire to watch on the move and its too big with its 7" screen for the car .  Ho hum  :-\

Nice work on the repair! 8) Something like that would be great for trains/car journeys but its definitely not a pocket carry item :D

Thanks for that cryptrick :) Think i've pretty much made my mind up now! Got a question for you though :D When you plug it into the computer can you still play music on the player or does it go to a charging/transferring mode? Would be nice to try and make a docking station for it if possible :)

When you plug it into the comp, the music stops (ie. no music through the headphones, but you could obviously play the files from the Zen in WMP etc) and 'Docked' and a USB icon comes up on the Zen's screen, bill gates then pops up saying what do you want to do with the device, 'Open device to view files' 'sync device' etc.

Me :o Would i do such a thing :D  Oh yes i would wouldn't I  >:D

Go for the Ipod line has lots of aftermarket products.

Yes you're right it does have a lot of aftermarket products, but its also become a fashion statement and i don't want to buy something just to be seen as someone who wants to "fit" in i want to get something on its own merits! Add to that it is only really capable of being used on one PC* iTunes being a horrible program to use (for me) apparently its much better on the Mac hardware/software....thats nice...i have a Windows based PC :twak: the scroll interface is rubbish in my eyes i've played with a few friends iPods and half the time you try and scroll it doesn't work then the other 49% of the time you shoot straight past where you want to be and the 1% of the time it does work (for me) it just feels wrong :-\ Also i did say in my first post (and a subsequent post) that i don't want an iPod :D

Please don't take any offense to the ramblings above they are just my rant against iPods :D

*i know you can get 3rd party apps that probably let you use it on more than one PC but why should I?! If i want to use my two (actually in my case more like 5) to change songs on my mp3 player why shouldn't i be allowed to!?

You could just replace the firmware on the ipod.

Well went with the Mozaic 16GB in the end ::) While a decent video experience would have been a bonus its highly unlikely i'd use it often enough so thought what the hey i'd get the one i like the look of more :D (it's also slightly smaller and more lefty friendly :) ) I'll be sure to let you all know how it performs :)

Nice and cheap!  :D

It'll do the job.  If I had more time I'd be seriously tempted to make a nice retro looking shell for it to replace the somewhat scruffy plastics it has at present.  Project for another year perhaps :)

I actually don't listen to music that much unless I'm immersed, so it's limited to my room and home.

But yes, at some points I used to be one of those kids with their white earbuds playing on the highest volume...

I swear all those kids are deaf. I was usually at volume 2 or so... and my mp3 players of choice usually took an SD card instead of having a harddrive. Way cheaper.

Nowadays if I don't really listen to music on the go, but I do have a small library on my PSP which is usually with me on double duty. :D
Got those frog legs.

I almost bought an Archos a few years ago.  :)

Good luck with your new player, Roadie.

Good luck with your new player, Roadie.

It arrived today :D And i like it :D Got most of my music transfered, just need to re-encode some tracks down to 192kbps (from 320kbps) and do a bit more ID3 tagging and it'll be perfect! UI is brilliant! And the screen is also quite good, a lot better than most of the reviews seem to make out :)
