What else do we collect?
on: August 01, 2017, 06:09:57 PM
Obviously we love our multitools and knives and hopefully I can post this thread here.  But usually when you have one "addiction/collection" you end up having other hobbies.  Please share your pictures and experiences.  Personally, while I have a few multitools, I think it all started with collecting fishing lures.  I have a few lures that I've collected over the years, many that are in storage because I don't go fishing as much as I would like.  I have a few SAKS and Lethermans but I also have a soft spot for quality tools and lures.  Below is a pic of some of the lures I have aquired over the years.   My softspot are Rapala lures.

I don't really collect anything, well unless it's a tool I can or will use on something, like a model? That's the only other thing I really have more then like five of and more then five to go..

I don't think I called it a collection until I realized how many I own :)  I started just buying them here and there when I found a good deal then I realized, hey, I think I now have a collection.  When I saw the pictures of others Multitools/Knives, I realize how much more I have to go.

Watches!

But the price and maintenance costs led me to something else.

Highly useable, precision made, by myself maintainable, lifetime lasting things...

SAKs and quality MTs! :ahhh

I still wear my watches and enjoy carrying them.
I still repair them for people around me and look out for them on fleamarkets. However SAKs have taken over their position as leading hobby. If I'm spending half an hour a week on my watch collection atm, it would be alot...

Watches, boots, I seem to accumulate flashlights, pens, and a microcollection of copies of Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, with the oldest copy in my current collection a 1925 edition scored for 50c at a used book sale.

"The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things..."

Japanese nihonto swords - here are a couple

Indo-Persian sharp/pointy things - 150-200 years old or so

American Brilliant Period cut glass - c. 1880-90 8" high footed rosebowl in the Russian pattern. A few hundred more pieces in the collection.

Gemstones - here are a Pink Tourmaline and an Amethyst that I cut

Plus, assorted ham radio gear and other stuff. My wife is a collector too, so the old homestead is a bit crowded!

I suppose the only thing, other than injuries, are watches and they aren't something that I've ever made a decision to collect.

You have quite a collection.  I also have stamps, didn't even think about that.  I have way too many to take pictures of.  Stamp collecting was very popular in the Soviet Union .

Apart from collecting stuff that are mt.o related, like multitools, saks, flashlights, keychain and one piece tools, I collect snow globes and fridge magnets, and especially comics...
I have quite large collection of comics, and I collect mainly Italian Bonelli editions-they are extremely popular in my country, and I also have some of US DC & Marvel editions, along with some BD issues.
Some quick pics of my Snow globes:

That is a really interesting collection,  how did you get into collecting glassware?

And how did you learn how to cut gemstones? Are you of Jewish or Hindu descent?

I started collecting cut glass about 20 years ago when I inherited a few pieces from my mother. I got interested in the history and deciphering American cutting houses and patterns of the 1880s to early 1900s. These were mostly in NY (a lot around Corning), Pennsylvania, Ohio with a few scattered about the rest of the country. There were also several companies in the Toronto area.

Nope, not Jewish nor Hindu - 96% N European mutt. Ancestry DNA says we have 1% Neanderthal and 3% from the Caucuses (Attila the Hun, et.al.??).

I started collecting rocks and minerals in High School and progressed to lapidary work and then faceting. It is fun, but very detailed. Can be frustrating - sometimes you just have to walk away for awhile when a stone will cut fine and then refuse to polish (sapphires are notorious for this - usually just one facet). In college I cut the stone for my wife's engagement ring.

If one was to own 10 compasses, would this mean this certain somebody is a collector ...?

P.S.: I know there are only 6 compasses on the pic, but there's one button compass that's on the strap of my Casio Riseman G-Shock, and since I took this pic I've bought 3 more ...  ::)

I collect SAKs, with a secondary collection of other knives, mainly traditional folders.

I have libraries of books, LP records and CDs, and video tapes. The difference? Every thing in the libraries gets used, and they are regularly pruned.

So what's the difference between 'a collection' and merely owning lots of something?  Would having more bikes than you can ride at once count as a collection?  Asking for a friend. ;)
