Backcountry Repair Kit
on: January 24, 2010, 08:00:20 AM
So, I was wondering what kind of gear you always pack with you to repair anything that might break down on you, be it skis, stove or whatever. I figure an MT/SAK is one, but what else?

duct tape
WD-40 pen

you may want to consider gorilla tape instead of bog standard duct tape, it is like duct tape on steroids.

As above plus mole grips, PTFE tape and a short handled adjustable spanner.

Wire!

I've got some 24 gauge wire that I've started making smaller spools out of to keep in kits.

As of now, my small backcountry ski kit includes:

4 - 11" zip ties
2 - 1 3/8" hose clamps
2 - super strong elastics
1 - large bore needle with strong nylon thread
1 - mini Bic lighter wrapped in...
1 - roll of approximately 5' of duct tape
1 - tube superglue

Need to still grab:
6 - bindings screws
1 - metal ski scraper, with 6-8 holes drilled into it
6-8 - self tapping screws
1 - 4' roll of hardware/heavy gauge wire
1 - spare ski basket

Safety pins can be useful. Some nylon strips and cordura fabric patches salvaged from an old pack or piece of gear for tent or pack repair along with a few common buckles and other plastic hardware.

I re roll black tape and duct tape on Bic pens to make them smaller to carry. I saw this on EDC.

I don't leave the house without tape on me - about 10' around a credit card in my wallet at the least. I have been asked for it so many times, I would never stop carrying it :)

Zip ties have saved me a few times on late night mountain bike rides, in fact about 2 months back the bolt in my rear derailleur came out and i fitted a trusty zip tie, paracord and tape is good to carry as well,  :tu:

I have rolled duct tape and biadhesive on a loop screw, and hung it on my keychain.
it looks like a soft kubotan, so I cut the excess screw ;)

A needle assortment, (including a sail cloth needle), dental floss, paracord, super glue, cloth tape, safety wire, a couple hot glue sticks, and a hand full of rubber bands, paper clips, safety pins and buttons.  I will eventually add duct tape, so far it has just been on hand, but not part of the kit.  If I use baking soda as tooth powder it doubles as super glue fixer, fast drying becomes instantaneous with a stronger bond.    I recently used a short length of 1.75" synthetic webbing as a patch for a older canvas duffle bag so my riggers belt is a resource.  I bought the buckle and the webbing separate.  I ran the webbing doubled, I can lose a lot and still keep my pants.

While not intended for skiing, this still would be useful.

No you're efficient.  Lazy would be telling us you have something to share and then taking a week to do it.  thanks for the link.  It's a cool kit.

I also toss in a couple feet of 22ga insulated wire- you can always strip it- and a few zip ties. A little bit of high viz duct tape, as it conforms better than gorilla and is also able to be used as a trail marker. Only need a could feet of each. And I never leave home without paracord.

My repairkit depends...
For most backpacking trips I got these Items:
Small Sewing kit (like that one here, includes 2 Needels, safety pin, some buttons and threat, can be found in most hotel rooms http://www.hotelmegastore.com/images/ensemble/1435_L.jpg)
some wire (about 0,5m of 1/2mm steel wire)
some rope (2mm dyneema-core), can be used for tents and stuff
roll of dental floss
2 zipties

All this put together in film-container (like that one https://www.cacher-zentrale.de/images/shop/view/filmdose_CZDOSE.jpg ) which is wrapped with Ductape.

There is not much you cant fix with this and a SAK/MT on the way. And if you cant fix it with that, its so broken you wont fix it anyway.
