Pulse Rejects Awl Transplant
on: October 24, 2008, 03:30:49 PM
One of my favourite MT's is Leatherman's Pulse , the only thing missing is a Awl & a saw. I was measuring up the different tool bits on my LM's with my digital vernier caliper , like you do  ::). The tool bits on the PST range is very similar in it's dimensions, too those found on the Pulse. So I pulled apart my generic PST & Pulse . I decided to remove the Pulse's small screw driver bit & substitute it for the PST's awl. The 2 tool bits having the same diameter pivot hole, width & close enough in length. The key difference being the locking notches on the 2 bits.As seen in the photo.

The PST's awl is on the left the Pulse's screw driver is on the right.
Just for the heck of it I put the Awl bit in the Pulse. It fitted perfectly , the tool closed well & there was no interference with the other tools . But the awl as I expected did not lock properly in place. So stage 2 was trying to modify the PST's awls locking notch to that of the Pulse's tool bit. To do this I used my Dremal , I think this was a mistake & I probably removed too much metal. I ended up using a small saw blade with wet and dry sand paper folded around it to file the notch more accurately . In hindsight, I would use the sand paper method too do the filing and not use the Dremal. When I had finished sanding the notch I was fairly happy with the visual results.

PST Awl filed on R , Pulse screw driver on L

It is funny looking at the photos I can see the Awls filled notch is too wide , I  did not notice that with my eye inspection. When I put the newly filled awl in the Pulse it did lock but the amount of play/movement was excessive & would have caused tool damage  :(.So I returned the 2 tools back to their original formats. The awl still works fine in the PST. If I had a spare PST awl, I am not prepared to work on my new PSTII's awl, I would give it another go using just the sand paper method.

Things I now know, my fat fingers struggle with small tool bits + even smaller washers :ahhh.By using 2 bits of wire I was able to put the Pulse back together quite easily in the end.

I would be interested to know if the awl into Pulse could ever work , Kwakster ? Bob?

Thanks for your kind words gents.Tis a shame the mod did not work , so close .Perfect fit no interference I just could not match the locking notch profile  :(. If I had a spare PST awl or 2 I would give it another crack.BTW the Super Tool 200's awl is not transferable not only is the tool bit wider it is longer & a different shape .

For a bit of fun I tried fitting my Fuse's pliers head to the Pulses handles , that definitely is not a goer. :D :D

That's a good idea. Mat, have you considered modifying your PST flat screwdriver into an awl, then using it in the Pulse?
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools
