The Powerassist seems like the solution to a problem that never existed...

Outside opening blades, YES!

Wasting an entire handle for a mechanism to open blades "really fast"...NO!

...I still would love to handle one though :multi: :D

Not only that, but the video shows the man using two hands to unlock, then deploy the blade. I would like to be able to access tools from the outside, as in the Victorinix SwissTool, but the SOG Powerassist looks needlessly complicated.

There were two or three working prototypes at the SHOT show last February. (Its been so long that I can't remember for sure) :P  I wonder if they've built any more in the ensuing nine months? ::)

I actually wanted one of these until I saw this video.

For several months now I have been anxiously awaiting the the release of the Power Assist. It looked to have the fit and finish of a SOG with an externally opening blade.  Seeing this thing in action just makes it look a bit clumsy, and unnecessarily so.

I own a SOG Powerlock and I find it to be a wonderful piece of equipment, a very slick product altogether, except for one thing......I never carry it.  Almost without fail I end up choosing my Leatherman New Wave.

It seems to me that Leatherman has a very good design with the Wave/Surge.  I find myself pulling out the knife blades and retracting them with one hand with such flair that people actually make comments about it.  I just don't believe that the Power Assist will bring anything new and relevant to the table.  But I do believe it will be a slickly executed design.  How cool would it be if SOG had the rights to build it's own New Wave?

:)

I think SOG needs to up the ante on this PowerAssist if they plan on competing with Leatherman. How about adding an assisted-opening diamond file instead of the second knife blade? Or how about a one-hand assisted-opening ratcheting bit driver? C'mon Spencer!

Hmmm, it does look a bit too clumsy in that vid. The extra safetly lock to open it is fine, I mean anyone who's had a flash open in their pocket can understand lol. It's needing two hands to close it again that really bugs me. I've been really wanting to get one, but I don't know, almost easier to open a power lock to get the inside blade in and out then it is to get the SAT going on that thing. Not so sure the loss of extra tools is worth it any more.
On the other hand, he was also using 2 hands to open the pliers which we all know isn't necessary so maybe with some practice it can be done with one hand. I don't think I want to to go and buy one any more honestly, but I still think I'll ask for one for X-mas  :D

Edit: I just watched the video again, and I'm pretty sure it can pretty easily be done one-handed, he was just demoing the way the safety mechanism works. The loss of a couple tools still bugs me though so I'll just hope for one as a gift rather than spending my own money, but I do still want one. First thing I'll be doing however is changing out the tools. If I can't have enough tools for it to be truly versatile (especially compared to my SURGE!) I'd rather it have tools I actually use the most often. Ditch the saw and maybe replace the V-cutter for some scissors and maybe bit driver (even if carrying an extra part in my pocket for the bit driver to even work is frankly a retarded design) and it'll be a lot more useful to me for around the house and work as an EDC; but for anything serious SOG still doesn't have anything that's going to replace the Surge any time soon. I suppose I could always leave the saw and replace the v-cutter with a file, then get a Micra that I've been looking for an excuse to get anyway to supplement it for scissors and whatnot to get a more complete tool load-out. Hmmm, decisions. This is the very reason that I love SOG's decision to make their multi's customizable
