My son just picked up a new in package red cellidor Pocket Pal.  I can't find anywhere when that model was discontinued?  The clear plastic package is dated 2007.

I bought one a couple years ago from a online source, since showed out of stock ?

Not sure the status.

It is great pocket knife, your son has a good eye for form and function.  !!

That should be a good knife for him. I tried searching the internet to find when the Pocket Pal was discontinued, but I had no luck. :like: :tu:

Thanks Vicman!  I had no luck either.  It sure is a slender knife.

I thought they were still making it?   Now with inlay instead of hot stamp.  Got mine in the pocket today.  (though I don't notice it)  :salute:

I'm thinking about picking the one that's been there since probably 2007 (recall that's the only year that chain carried SAKs) from Magic Mart. I used to think blade only SAKs were kinda defeating the purpose of an SAK, but then again, the steel SAKs use is excellent, in that they resist rust well in non-salt water conditions, while still holding an edge well, unlike most highly rust resistant blade steels.

Non-trolling, serious question here:

Other than for a collector or simply because they are discontinued, what's the allure?

As far as a simple 2-blade slip joint goes, I think some of the offerings from Case, Schrade, and Queen look better. I'm attracted to SAKs because of the multi-tool aspect. If it only has blades, why the Vic over the other, "prettier" brands?

Or is it only the discontinuation/collectibility of it?

I saw one in the case of my local hardware store this AM. New in packaging.

Of course my hardware store sell surplus gear from 1950, so that doesn't say much.

If anybody wants it let me know and I'll pick it up for you. .

For me,  I'm not really in to any other knives other than SAKs.  While I understand it leaves some tools to be desired, it pairs nicely with a Rambler or other keychain SAK.    The things I like about it are it is SUPER light weight, slimmer than most 84mm, has 2 blades that are great for things like whittling, food prep, desk knife.  It's even less noticeable in the pocket than a Cadet or Ambassador IMO, has that classic SAK look, snap & feel, can be carried for Monday Oneday, has one of the smallest blades you can find on any SAK,  and it's very affordable.  I got mine for a few bucks used.

As far as why a single function SAK over a Case, Schrade, etc folder, because of size and weight for me.

Single function SAKs do not have sharp corners to cause extra wear of the pocket or uncomfort. They come without gunk from machining in the mechanism. They are very well built, highly functional, low maintenance. Weight is low compared to a knife with bone and brass in the handle. You do not pay for frills or decorative materials. I've owned several GECs and Case knives, and I liked them less than I like the Sentry resting in my pocket right now.

Simple, functional, reliable.

Or to answer more directly, I prefer minimalistic over decorated most of the time. Your question was the answer, the SAKs are "less pretty", and some of us like that.  :)

Because it's red and it's got the Vic cross and shield logo  :D :D :D

Ok... seriously, i think most of the reasons where given already above. Since i'm not and never been much of a "knife" guy but rather a SAK guy mainly Vic, i'm more attracted to it's simplicity and high quality with low cost and weight, end yes to it's looks (because a Sak, even two bladed ones look like a Sak, ans not like a "knife"). For an 84mm tou can't beat that size and weight too.

Oh... and did i said it's also because it's red and it's got the Vic cross and shield logo...?
