My first SAK mod attempt.
on: October 26, 2008, 06:40:36 PM
The other week, Neil (NKB) was kind enough to do a giveaway of a Bantam to the first person that said that they wanted it.  Well as I practically live on here, it was no surprise that I stumbled across it first and I jumped on it as the Bantam was a SAK I wanted to get hold of.

Well a few days later the Bantam arrived and included in the package were 3 SAK's that had seen better days that Neil had included for me so I could have a go at doing some SAK modding.

It has been a bit of a quiet day today so I thought I'd give it a go.  I thought I'd start with a Huntsman and see how I got on.  It came without any scales so I got on straight away with trying to remove the three rings.

Using a drill and 2 different sized drill bits, I managed to remove the three rings without any damage.  I then filed down the other pin and then drilled that out as well.

After removing all the burrs on the pins, I started stripping the SAK down into all it's components.

Having decided on my SAK combo, I carefully pieced the SAK back together with the tools that I wanted in there.  Now it was the time for the dreaded peening  :-\.  Having never done this before, this was the part I was most worried about.  It actually wasn't as bad as I expected, however I certainly won't be winning any awards for my peening quality.

After a few adjustment taps, I was pretty happy with the snap etc on the saw, but the small blade seems a bit sloppy and has little to no snap at all.  I noticed this on the original Huntsman so maybe the backspring has weakend ???

I added some black scales and a lanyard made by Ryan (Roadie) and after a bit of a clean up, here is the final result;

Overall I am pretty happy with the result.  I will definitely be having another go at some point in the future and I think I can do a better job second time round.

Thanks for the parts Neil!  :tu:

I'm back!!

It did the job, I wouldn't worry.  Like you said, the biggest pitfall is overdoing it.  You passed the test  :salute:

Then you'll have to make your own scales.  :pok:  I'd get checking eBay for that artistic eye :P

It looks like you may have started with too much pin stock. You really only need less than half the thickness of the bushing to start...peen until the action feels right then file off the excess.

Yes that was the problem.  I was unsure how much to leave on but I will know now for next time.  :)

The pin on the right (front of the knife) is about right to start.

Peening down the edges will give you a domed head which is then filed flush.

Yeah I had a tad more than that.  I could probably do with a decent hammer as well.  Mine isn't exactly the best.

Tiny little ball hammer.  They only cost about three quid if you hunt around.

The good thing about getting your busings looking nice is you can use translucent scales on your mods and put smiley faces on them  :D

 Did I admit that in public

I have been using Mr. Lucky...a 4oz hammer whose face I rounded and polished. Recently I purchased a smaller 2oz hammer for Alox mod work because the face us narrower.

I've tried the 2oz once and though it takes a few more strikes I like the narrower face as forces me to concentrate the blows more precisely.
