I just wonder about alternative fastening methods.

And thank God that we do, eh?

I might well try that when I get some time. I suppose threading would be difficult, as the distance between the threaded area is going to vary from knife to knife?

Or would you use pins that are threaded along their total length?

Like stated I don't think fully threaded pins would work good, I will research some and see what is available (sizes)

Heretics! :twak: :D

You're probably thinking of shoulder screws...no one has found them in sizes small enough to work with SAKs yet. The smallest I've found were 4mm and 3/32"

So you did! That makes my first point the main one to overcome I think. You'd almost have to add the thread after the precise length of the pins was known. That would certainly foul up my method, as I like to leave the pins waaaay over length during assembly, and then crop them just prior to peening.

I'll be interested to see what you dig up WhichDawg!

I used to come here a lot.

I thought of that, and got one in fact from rotokid, used to limit the drilling depth in the scales. That's huge by comparison (although not as small as the ones you mention) and wouldn't do the trick.

I used to come here a lot.

Yep, the Modular SAK subject has been discussed several times in the SOSAK way back...there has been no successful conclusion.

Something that might have more of a chance of success is the Hobo knife concept where two halves are held together buy doll's heads. You could split a knife in half to use the pliers and screwdrivers or another combination of tools at the same time...

I can tell you the sizes in metric.  on the standard 91mm knives the two end pins (for blade/tool pivot) are 2.5mm.  The two centre pins are 2.25mm.  On a 84mm knife all four pins are 2.25mm.  By far and away the easiest thing to do is re-use the pins from the knife you are taking apart, just as Ben did.  I hope that helps.

PS. Or you can just e-mail Rotokid, nice chap and will make sure you get the right stuff.
