Axe similar to Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe
on: November 20, 2019, 06:10:46 AM
I am going on a hike-in-and-stay hunting trip soon. I have decided that my WalMart hatchet and saw need an upgrade. The small forest axe is my dream axe, but I don’t want to spend that much money. I am thinking it may be a bit heavy for my application as well.. Are there any options that are close, but in a cheaper price range? The Husqvarna Carpenter’s axe looks close in size but I am not sure about the shape and performance of the head. Thanks!!

As a side note, I have a saw picked out: the Sven 21 inch backpacking saw. Does anyone have any experience with it?

This is a really good hatchet; in fact, my favorite along with the Estwing. Made by Ochsenkoph in Germany.  Should be available at any Stihl dealer for about $30.

for the occasional use Fiskars axes are a good way to go, have one myself (X7)
Just get a kydex sheath for them.

Bought it for a bowmaking course and it served me well.

I have a Fiskars hatchet that performs very well. Does the axe do a pretty good job? Been curious about buying one.

It does.
There are two drawbacks (depending on your exspectations) : the *sheath* is crap imho, so make a kydex yourself.
And the factory edge tends to roll as some people experienced. Resharpened mine before use and had no issues.

Good axe for the money.

I second that, I have both the Fiskar/Gerber Hatchet and Axe, both are great for the money.

In terms of the saw, I have no experience with the Sven, but I do have a similar design Coghlans folding saw that does a good job

I couldn't get the GB when I was after one, but a friend recommended the Hultafors Ekelund 0.85 hunting axe Premium. Pretty much identical and lower cost as well.

I've had mine around 5 years and it's pretty much perfect.

Looks like a good axe. If you could get it for the right price. Still on the expensive side but the OP might be happy to pay that. Hultafors own Hults Bruks who also make the Husqvarna forestry axes and are a bit cheaper again. If you are willing to put some work you can get a very good axe for not too much money. I have the limbing axe (previously called the forestry axe) but the carpenters axe is probably about the right size
