Just got my Grail Knife!
« on: April 09, 2021, 07:26:03 PM »
I just received my grail knife in the mail!  It's a Victorinox Champion B with long file, bail, metal-headed tweezers, and nickel inlay.  It is in excellent condition with almost no signs of sharpening.  It has a small crack in one scale coming from the bail to the top on the side by the tweezers. I'm very excited!

It literally just got here, so I haven't cleaned it at all, but here are pictures.  I totally can't afford this, but I haven't seen this since I began looking last year, so...

Bad word, bad word, bad word....   I just broke my grail knife.  The can opener was slightly bent and rubbing on the frame.  My "adjustment" snapped the last 1/4" (8mm) off the pointed part of the opener.  It still has most of th c-shape and the driver, but, d amn!

BTW, interesting thing.... the scales polished up nicely.  While doing so, there was a distinct pine-like smell.  I've never had that before.  My methods is using micro-mesh sandpaper, and I am certain it was not them.  The knife had already been cleaned, not with a pine-y cleaner.

:'( sorry to hear about the break.

The camphor smell is normal for some scales. Not all, but generally until they were injection moulded, I think.

Wow, sorry you broke it. That's a miserable feeling. Don't ask me how I know.

It has a couple interesting features. I did not realize they made Champions with Tinker drivers. Also, I never saw a SAK before with the scissors pivoting on the small end. Does it have another tool across from the scissors on the same layer?

Guess you need a scissor spring, too, by the looks of it.

This life is merely a staging ground for eternity. Are you preparing for the rest of forever?

Nice find DavZel ! BTW your knife is not very common with this back side smooth Phillips. Usually for that age Phillips (on Champion)  has file ;)

The "B" is the screwdriver model.

Nothing opposite the scissors. The file is on the back, though.  I think the spring on the scissors is correct.  It matches the one wiki, also.

It might be because this has the long file on the back?

I think the spring is a broken double-leaf type. Those go with the ‘new’ (c.’70) style scissors. The single leaf springs arc the opposite way, and have a bend at the tip. I’ve modded broken ones to look and function like a single leaf.

Hi matey, very sorry to hear you’ve broken the can opener, gutting, to say the least! I have the same model, with the long file, no file on the Phillips, it was my late father’s. It had always been an object of “desire” for me as a kid, 😂. It was kept in a drawer in the caravan, I don’t actually remember it ever being used, just there, in case, on our holiday jaunts.
I know they’re rather collectible, especially the long file version, I did carry it around for a while (got a belt pouch for it), but I ended up getting myself one of the new Champs, with pliers, magnifying glass, etc. because I didn’t want it to lose its pristine appearance! If you don’t mind me asking, how much did you pay for yours, I would never sell mine, but always good to know!

Thanks,
Matt.

That is correct. All SAKs with the long nail file have the scissors pivot on the end with the main blade.
