Day 2:

Happy New Year folks!
As I promised, I gave the Spirit some kitchen time...

finally, I cut up some Strawberries for dessert, they succumbed to the sharp blade with ease. So easily, in fact, that I cut myself! That in my palm is the latest cut of 2017, thanks to the Vic's "cute and stupid" butter blade :ahhh
But it was tiny and cleaned quickly

(Image removed from quote.)

That Butter Blade might be "cute and stupid"  but it DEMANDS respect or it gets real "Smarty". :pok: :pok:
Glad to see it just gave you a quick nip and it's nothing serious.
Good posts guys.  :tu:

Day 03:

I'm really enjoying this thread. You guys are knocking out of the park so far.  :salute:
Very glad to be a part of this challenge!

Last night the Spirit got used for a little light duty opening a package of tea, filing a torn nail (again!), and tightening a connector on the DVD player.

This morning I decided to sharpen the chisel/wire stripper tool. To me this is really a small Kiridashi. So, if you guys will allow, I'm going to call this tool a Kiridashi.

I noticed that the screws on one of the kitchen cabinets had backed out a bit, causing the doors to rub. Quick job for the Spirit.

Day 4

Happy New Year !

Noticed some frost at the bottom of our front door this morning, -15F. I used the Phillips to adjust the door sweep to get a tighter fit to keep out the draft. It worked well and was up to the task

Day 4

No work today and since I didn't have to be out in the cold I decided to stay in today  Not a lot to do today but I did use the butter blade to cut a piece of excess duct tape on a Christmas decoration box and it did the job  No pic of that since I was in the middle of helping the wife ::) :D This pic will have to do ;)

I'm not sure if I'm too late, or too early? But I want in!

I love my Spirit and carry it in my jacket pocket now that it's cold out.

The pup frayed her chew toy, so I cut off the end of the rope so she could still play with the rest. I was absolutely amazed at how easily the butter blade went through it.

Day 3

Dawn. Phillip the Recessed Screw burrows deep into the ground. Cozy. Proud. And oblivious.
Show content

Phillip is minding his own business, but alas, he is himself the business of someone else, someone much higher on the food chain.
Victor, keen for an easy kill, approaches silently, with its proboscis ready to get to work.
Show content

Victor pounces, reaching deep into Phillip's abode. The affair is smooth, rapid, and deadly.
Show content

His thirst far from quenched, Victor calls again and again, along the whole colony.
Show content

There are no more bodies to add to the gruesome pile. The colony is decimated. Victor rests, and the screws across the plains convince themselves, foolishly, that they are safe.

Day 4: I need a torch screwdriver. The LM (non-universal) Tool Adapter works surprisingly well on the Spirit.

Day 04:

The first hint of a concern with the Spirit arose today. Let me explain:

I decided to make a billy can for boiling water in the field from an old tomato can. I tossed the can on the grill yesterday and burnt out the lining. Then boiled some water with a bit of vinegar in the can to get rid of the residue and clean it out. So far, so good.

I used the Spirit's file to clean up the sharp edges of the can where the lid had been cut away.

The file worked well, but left it's own coarse sratches in the metal lip. I cleaned these scratches up with a quick wipe of sandpaper. Nice.

Next, I used the Spirit's punch to bore a hole on either side of the mouth. I drove the reamer through the can from the inside, knowing that I could use the file to clean up and jagged edges formed from 'drilling' out the holes. A small piece of leather supported the can and protected the point of the reamer.

Now here is where the concern is: when I examined the reamer after punching the holes in the can (with a little twist to open them up), I noticed that a small section of the edge of the reamer had been chipped (torn?) off, a few millimeters back from the tip. This is the spot where I twisted the reamer to open the hole in the can. At first I thought the edge had just rolled and used a stone to sharpen the reamer back up, but then I inspected the edge with a jeweler's loop and noticed some clear chipping.

This disappoints me. Drilling a hole in a can is something an awl/reamer/punch should be able to do. For comparison, I dug out my Rebar and did the same test on a similar can. No edge damage at all. I prefer the Spirit's more narrow reamer design, but I have to give the nod to the Rebar that can do the same task without getting torn up. I suspect that Victorinox's steel is too soft here and that the edge just got torn up by the drilling/twisting action. (I tried to get a photo of the edge, but I couldn't master the demands of Macro photography.)

I did end up using the file again to clean the jagged metal edges created by drilling my handle holes. Finally, I used the wire cutters to cut a length of tie wire and then used the pliers to crimp the wire into a bail for the billy can.

So, task accomplished, but I'm now concerned about the strength of the reamer. Might need to find some extra tasks for this tool to attempt.
