While undertaking the current 30 day Wave challenge I found I was disappointed by some of the tools missing on the Wave that I have on my Spirit X.  The lack of a chisel, and awl, and wire scraper are 3 notable tools I use or like to have handy if needed. The closest option I found to pair with the wave for the awl and scraper is the Victorinox electrician.  The electrician blade is great, but that awl is second to none.  I now prefer it to the awl on other SAKs. I also get the benefit of the more robust slotted driver/pry bar on the combo cap lifter tool. I’m thinking that grinding down the large slotted driver on the wave might be the best option now to add a chisel. So far I’m happy with this pair and used it during the current challenge to install some child safety locks on drawers where I needed an awl to start a pilot hole.

Truly it is the best awl and I did carry a 93mm alx for a good while just because of that awl :salute:

I even put one in a 91mm mod that I keep close to me in my work back pack always

Wave and Executive today

A Wave and a Bantam make for a truly great combo! :tu: Not that I'm biased or anything...

I know I’ve posted several times in this thread about my combos - I thought I’d share the 3 or so versions that serve my needs.  A while ago I found a few posts here that inspired a couple pairs so I’d like to summarize for others looking. My goal is a tool set that duplicates as few tools as I can across the MT and SAK.  These are all stock with no mods, which I think is helpful for folks that can’t or won’t mod their MT. At some point I’ll get around to modding a Wave or Surge for the ideal all in one.

In all photos I’ve opened on the SAK the additional tools that compliment the primary multitool. In most cases the SAK scale tools are a compliment, except on my Wave+ I tuck them away in the negative space around the saw/file.

My primary office pair, unless I’m doing a 30 day challenge like the current Wave one, is a PST and Compact.  I also travel with an old PST and Huntsman in my checked luggage.

My primary lab work pair is a Wave+ and recently acquired Electrician. I occasionally carry a Blast round the house which also pairs well with the electrician.

My primary DIY multitool, especially if there’s plumbing or electrical work involved is the Spirit X. I find it has almost everything I could need, unless I need the bit driver, at which point I’ll use the Wave/Electrician pair. Pairing the Spirit X with the Waiter adds the scale tools and corkscrew. This pair also works great for hiking and camping.  I also recently acquired a first gen Wave, which I’ve only carried for a few days on a short walk here and there and pair it with the Waiter.  When I’m out and not working on something that needs a more robust tool, I’ll pair the Waiter with a PSTII.

I’m sure I’ll update these combos at some point. My hope is this is helpful if others are looking for well rounded MT/SAK pairs without modding. Thanks for reading.

Great post Grand_Banana!

The photos with all the tools spread out is really helpful. Thanks for the effort!

I have a few combos for different use cases myself, to put it mildly. I'll post here once I get around to take some photos.

Today’s combo is another favorite: Swisstool Spirit X and Rally. No duplication in tools, unless you count the individual wire stripper and cap lifter on the 2 combo tools. I do wish the swisstools had toothpick and tweezers, and it would be nice if they included a smaller size Philips. A great minimal carry for weekend work.

Indeed. Texas Tool Crib has a couple of ideal build ideas for LM on his YouTube channel and modded his Surge to include some.

Posted this combo in another thread earlier this week, but I don’t think it’s here. One of my top 3 favorite combos with little overlap in implements: Spirit X and Waiter.
