 :iagree: A great combo  :like:

I may carry my father’s Ranger and PST tomorrow.   Two great pieces - the Ranger has the metal tweezers nub, grooved corkscrew, and awl without sewing eye, and the PST is pre-date code.

Nice!   Great pieces for sure!

I'm assuming your Ranger has very few tools on the backspring since it's an early one.  Awl and corkscrew only probably?

Mine has a tool on every backspring, and that's one thing I love about the Ranger--the tool density.  Not that it really matters--it's a very rare occasion indeed when I use the hook, chisel or small flat-blade screwdriver on the backspring anyway.

I have a couple of Champions from the same era as your Ranger, and they only have the awl and corkscrew as well.  But, none of mine have the sentimental value from being my father's, which is really cool in your case!!

I've carried the same Ranger/PST combo many times, but I do miss having the bit driver of the Skele when I do since the Ranger doesn't have a dedicated phillips driver.  Of course the PST has a much better plier head than the Skele, so that's always a tradeoff.

I love the Ranger so much that it was what I based my first mod on :dd: I even named it the Master Ranger to honor it :D It is in this thread quite a number of time but from a fee years back :salute: I keep it in my work backpack always and this thread was part of the inspiration for creating it :tu:

Love that PST/Ranger combo, G_B and even better that it has some sentimentality  :woohoo: :like:

 Thanks, Poncho.  I do wish my father would continue to carry them, but he just doesn’t so they’re with me.

The master ranger is a brilliant concept. It’s the step in between champion and outdoorsman I would use.  The file is super handy.

Yep, I remember this one.  Very cool.  It's kind of a Woodsman with file and awl added, really.  Or, a Champion with no scaler and awl added.

Does it have the chisel and slotted screwdriver on the back?

Looking back, it seems I rarely, if ever, post a pair with a Spirit, because it's so complete it feels like cheating.  That is, since my goal is always to minimize tool redundancy...

Here's a good pair:

:iagree: :like: that’s indeed a great pair! A Swisstool with pruner blade would be a nice tool.

I keep waiting on Heidi-Shop to run another SAK sale so I can grab the Alox 2 (and several others…). The US Vic website has it listed but out of stock, so maybe they’re releasing again?

It's been a regular production item for a long time, and I haven't heard of them being discontinued so, I would think (hope) so.

I've been away for quite a while and didn't realize these had all been renamed with model numbers.  How confusing that you have to memorize the numbers now.  "Pruner" makes much more sense to me.  I mean, they still use the Pioneer and Farmer designations...

It's also a shame you can't get the standard Spirit with serrated blade anymore, as it paired very well with any dedicated blade.

It does have those plus a hook as well  I actually did take a Champion apart,  added the inline awl in place of the small blade, took the scaler out and cleaned it all up before putting it back together  :salute:

My dad has several LM but never carries them :ahhh he always had a multi bladed trad on him though :tu:

As I said above, I took a donor Champion and am very pleased with it  The Executive is just to hard for me to remove from my pocket or else it would be what was carried :tu:

Great combos, awl. Glad to see this thread bumped and in use it’s one of my favorites.

Here’s a favorite combo:

Technically, no tool overlap if you allow for tools like the 3D Phillips as different sizes and the combo tools as having similar but distinct builds/functions.

Nice one G_B!

It should be assumed that I have a Rambler with me at all times, BTW...  I awlways forget to include it in the picture.

I nearly grabbed a rambler after getting my first classic, then instead I got a rally and to compliment my MTs with scissors. I realized I probably should’ve just got the rambler, but then thought what if I just get the midnite manager  as I already always have another SAK with tweezers/toothpick on me. Then, I found a Midnite MC on sale the same price as the manager and a friend ended up sending me one for Christmas.  My brother also gifted me an alox MC. Now, I can’t seem to justify the rambler!  I’ll probably end up with one at some point as I build out more combos

I'm disappointed in that decision too. I'm a big fan of the butter blade.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

I might be crazy but it's kept me from going insane- Waylon Jennings

:iagree: the butter blade is one of my favorite MT knives to use.

Also, I didn’t realize the swiss army 2 was still in production. I hope it’s back in stock on the Vic website sometime.
