Fuzzbucket: on Shelves

Cue music... Barwick Green 1924 (The Archers Theme) by Arthur Wood played continuously on loop... until we're all tuckerd-out dancing round the maypole...

Series 1: The Living Room Bookshelves Lefthand Side of the Fireplace not to be confused with the Righthand Side Bookshelves on the Righthand Side of the Fireplace were Mrs Fuzzbucket keeps her Lefthand Side Books

Episode 1: Top Shelf Pomp and Circumstance

Hello and welcome to a new insightful six part mini-series looking into the world of Fuzzbucket and exploring the authors passion for shelves.

Let's get right to it...

Top Shelf

At first glance there doesn't seem to be much to look at here... but wait!

Actually, before we come to that let's have a good look at the actual shelf - old reclaimed ash... look at that... just great.

Right... back to the contents, books on gardening, one by the  late Geoff Hamilton - a particular favourite, some blue binders entitled The British Empire (we'll take a more in depth look at that in just a moment) and a small red book covered in cobwebs - this unassuming little volume is actually my Book of Enemies and will be posted to the Telegraph (clear instructions left with solicitors) in the event of my disappearance/death/freak coma etc...

So, those Blue Binders. When I was a small boy and not the magnificent specimen of manliness that I am now, my favourite comics/magazines were: 2000AD, Star Wars comic, Mad magazine and... The British Empire partwork magazine.

Now I only had half a dozen or so editions of this magazine, but by golly, I thumbed through and gleamed every single piece of information I could from each of them cover to cover and absolutely relished doing so... I particularly liked the bits were Britishers got stuck into India and Africa, illustrations of various atrocities and unexplained pictures of naked ladies (Pabs ears prick Up) - It made a huge impression on my tiny underdeveloped little mind all those years ago... before the Internet.

Anyway, my lovely brother remembering how obsessively I loved those few magazines I had 30 odd years ago, tracked down the whole bloody lot of them and gave them to me as a birthday prezzie... what a an absolute Gent... (Sniff).

Just a scratch...
Poncho edit (Image may not be suitable for those under the age of 18 ) ;)

Naked Ladies...

Right, enough mush, next segment - Viewers corner (Shelf)

This is where I invite you the viewer to send in pictures of your favourite shelf... more to follow on this... maybe...

That's all for now, but don't miss the next episode... Second from the Top with a bonus Fuzzbucket's  Stool feature...as it's quite a boring shelf...!!!

Thanks, I've got Queen Victoria's Little Wars... somewhere (it's not on the shelf for some reason), but not the Lunatic Express - I'll have to track down a copy. If this is a favourite period of history for you, I suggest you keep an eye out for shelves episodes three and four!  :salute:

Actually... have you read Khartoum by Michael Asher or Soldier Sahibs by the bloody brilliant Charles Allen? They're cracking good reads!

I'm a general history buff. Just finished rereading Samuel Eliot Morison's "The European Discovery of America: The Northern Voyages and The Southern Voyages (two volumes). Great books, with the notes as extensive and readable as the text. And the research is awe-inspiring.

Morison was a history prof at Harvard, seaman, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and official U S Navy historian during WWII. Not too many like him around any more.

Will have to keep an eye out for your two recommendations. Thanks.
