I forgot to ask you Nate....is it holding up well...keeps a good edge in the field? You use it camping and such? How is the blade coating holding up?

Forget about "might be"....will be!  8)
Last weekend used pliers to remove the worn ferro rod, some superglue and the replacement went into the handle that comes with the knife.
When I'm out camping it's the knife that's with me, don't actually wear it on my belt....because mostly I don't have a belt on, but it's fine shoved in my pocket.

Basically, when I leave the house it's become the #1 way to light anything from a BBQ fire to the LPG burner.......and it cuts stuff as well!

Don't know what carbon steel they use, but even with a lot of coating gone rust is not an issue so far.

BTW, if you put me on the spot I'd say I collect large fixed blades....

Using Moras and seeing (just pics) Bark River Knives probably changed that.....  8) :D

Anytime I go into the woods or go hunting, I take my Bushcraft Black. It is my go to outdoors knife. It is straight up a tank. Holds a good edge for a long time. Easy to sharpen. The coating is holding up very well. The coating on the edge will be lost the first time you sharpen it. Makes the knife look even better. Got a two tone thing going on. The spine is sweet for ferro rods and so far with all the scraping on the ferro rods and wood, the coating is hold up rather well. It will baton wood,  clean game and do fine carving. If I had to go the into wilds with only one knife, the Bushcraft Black would be my choice.

+1 ??

I've got the model with the diamond sharpening jobbie on the sheath, and just with that the scandi is easy enough to maintain.

I'm by no means an expert, but if I think of the mechanics of a scandi grind and using/sharpening it, the micro bevel can only mean more work re-profiling later......?

I've only ever touched up the micro bevel on my Puukkos, and have (thankfully) never needed to remove metal from the whole primary grind. My oldest knife has done a lot of gardening, DIY tasks, fuel processing/kindling prep and I think I can still get a few more touch us sharpenings from it before I'll need to consider working the entire flank, as the micro bevel isn't as micro as it used to be. No detriment to performance though

Forgive me if I'm over explaining or telling you something you already know. :salute:

It's a fancy word for saying I put a regular edge on it just like my other knives. On scandi grind knives (like Moras) you are supposed to lay them flat on the grind and sharpen (like you do I think) and that maintains the factory edge and grind. Works great!!! It maintains the "zero grind" edge that most Moras come with.

On my Moras, I steepen the angle slightly when I sharpen so it makes a small secondary edge that is still extremely sharp but (reportedly) less prone to chipping/rolling. It's a thoroughly discussed topic on bushcrafting sites and helps smaller scandi grind knives maintain their edge better...I discovered that second hand as that was the way I have freehand sharpened for 40 years and only recently found out that there was a name for it. Frankly, it's the only way I know how to sharpen and works on everything I have. I'm too old (and crotchety) to learn something new!  :D

Sounds like it is unnecessary on that big robust Bushcraft Black!!

Here's a pic of my edge......

I meant more if it came that way or did you do it yourself. Still, thanks for the info!
That blade looks good sharpened that way. I just sharpen the whole edge. They are very easy to sharpen I think. No guess work on the angles or anything like that. Just place it on the stone and go for it.

I shared what I think about the knife, and considering the name and some of the uses mentioned here, I couldn't help but think about what I've used it for.
There is a massive price difference between the straight knife and the model with the ferro rod and the sharpener, and to be honest, if I didn't get mine with 40% discount it wouldn't have been worthwhile...
The only bushcrafty things I've used it for is:
1. making a quick spatula from a stick to stir the scrambled eggs....once
2. cleaning a fish....once
3. Starting fires. This accounts for 80% of it's use.

The rest is a bit of food prep, and cutting whatever needs to be cut, simply because it's there.

The reason why I use it to make fires is simple - just some practice. Some places it's easier than others, in the South the peeling Commiphora bark catches a spark very nicely, dry grass is pretty like petrol, but funny enough feather sticks with most of our wood is a waste of time...

I hate that one day that very comfortable handle will perish and fail. ;)
