Mild kobun mods coming along. Got it because I wanted a good aus8 fixed blade at a good price. I cut the back of the guard off so I can get my thumb on it, and am working on shaping it into a more rounded belly, slow going with the new diamond diafold. Will I wear it out doing this?

I'm still on a CS-boycott, but I have to ask about the Kobun......due to price I almost ordered it a few times, but I always worry about the grip material durability?

Why? (if you don't mind telling us)

Seems very good. Kraton g is it? Rubbery, very impermeable, hard enough that it doesn't pick up lint or dust (mine doesn't, though drop it in the dirt and there will be more on the handle). Overall an above average grip for being rubbery I'd say. Plus the kobun, last I checked wad under 30 on amazon us. Can't beat that for an aus8 fixed blade! I like the sheath as well.

My first cold steel actually, and I'm impressed by fit and finish. Mine came very sharp, excellent bevel, lightly oiled blade.

I was very pleased, but I'd wanted a tanto for a while. Now that I've had my fun, I'm modding it to a rounder belly, and I cut off the finger guard behind the blade.  :tu:

The CRKT thing.......mostly.
I would rather not support them, even in a small way.
Great products for the most part, and I'm sure they're not gonna cry about my few 3rd world $'s  :D

I was glad to see the CRKT lawsuit. One of my hobbies is home audio equipment where the marketers run the asylum, so to speak. You cannot trust a lot of specifications and product descriptions of audio equipment by manufacturers, even the well known companies. Sometimes, it's purposely meant to mislead. Other times, just out right lies that have no basis in audio science.

On the other hand, the knife industry seems much less plagued by that (yet). When CRKT started the "virtual fixed blades" for their folders advertising, easy thing for unknowing Joe consumer to be convinced by that phrase that they are automatically superior to every other folder. Cold Steel, as many people recognize, does have one of the strongest lock blade folder designs, so I really don't blame them. What CRKT marketers are doing is a slipperly slope that leads to all kinds of crazy claims. While CS has surely done a bit of exaggeration in their advertising themselves (and I'd be fine with competitors filing suit against them), I'm still quite happy to see anything that slows down marketers from creating their own fictions about knife products. No one wants the knife industry to end up like other industries.

Just food for thought. Not meant to start a debate.

Very good observations. I find myself tending to agree :tu:

I bought the kobun because I wanted the knife, and the only reason I think of the company is to judge qc and heat treat. (as long as they're not produced by orphans, all companies are just in it for the money, I don't care what they do :D )

I must admit, I do have two CS folders, three CS fixed blades, and one of their small daggers. I look forward to seeing what you do with the Kobun because I've toyed with the idea of getting one.  :)

Slowly but surely diamond stoning it into a round shape... It's quite durable steel :tu:

I fear by the end it'll be scratched to oblivion, as I'd also like to convex it :D ah well, it's a user

Valid point  :salute: Stuff CRKT as well then!  :D

I'll not get into my feelings about LT, but I think there's hundreds of knife companies/makers more deserving of my money.  :)
