Leatherman Tread Mods
on: January 30, 2018, 06:46:47 PM
I wear this nearly every day, mostly just as a piece of man bling but it does have a couple of handy features to it especially now it has added Torx bits #10, #8, #6 plus the 2mm & 1.5mm hex bits for adjusting scopes, knife pivots on the go etc.

On this one I have reversed the joint piece orientation, added a leather patch to the clasp underside for a more comfort fit, installed magnets to the clasp for extra closure security and made use of the hex shape holes by installing magnets and moulding JB Weld to store the flat bits.
There's a diamond file square, ferrocerium rod piece and four white tritium vials installed too.

I made a Flashlight Bit from some copper sheet, a warm white SMD LED and two SR 364 cells.
The light is held in by friction and operates on by sliding the unit back into the body segment to make cell contact, push from the back for off again.

.

I store leatherman flat bits in the available slots.
I basically covered the bits in light grease and then applied JB Weld and various magnets in the hex holes to keep them in place via magnetism & friction.
The bits only come out one way and one slot has a sealed end so the longer dual ended bits can be used for tightening/ loosening stuff.
There are magnets installed to give a more secure clasp closure and a leather patch on the clasp for a more comfortable custom fit.

.

.

Thanks for having a look  :tu:

Thanks for taking the time to detail the flashlight mod- I really like what you did there!

Wow. Didn’t think that was possible to mod. I had an idea once to mod a Tread with the Surefire watch and flashlight combo but it would have been expensive for me.  Especially since I probably won’t be using Tread tool.

Thanks for sharing.

Just amazing! And I really admire the originality. This is the first thread mod I have seen. I have done a fair bit of LM mods myself, but almost all of them has been inspired by other peoples ideas, even when I think I did a better job of it. Truly inspiring!

Mini screwdriver mod for Tread
Reply #26 on: October 03, 2019, 11:42:54 AM
Hi guys.
I've recently have got a chinese Tread knock-off (yep, i know, not cool, but original one's price will bite me too hard). Anyway, I've soon realised that I miss a tiny clockwork screwdriver there.

So here the mod goes.

1. First of all I've taken a model for the leatherman  bits here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:45306
2. Modified it by cutting from both sides to leave a 19mm base, and added 2mm hole through it
3. Printed the modified model with a 3d printer
4. Taken a small "+" screwdriver with a 2mm  diameter of the metal part, and cut out the plastic handle.
5. Hammered metal part of the screwdriver into the leatherman bit shaped plastic part
6. Sharpened second end of the metal part to get a "-" screwdriver.
7. Made some sandpaper work on the plasic part to fit it  into the corresponding hole in the Tread.
8. Used a couple of neodim magnets to secure  the "screwdriver bit" in the Tread. (screwdriver  is not magnetic enough, so I had to use two magnets, so they keep screwdriver from moving from both sides)

Hope it will help somebody.

I know this thread is older, but I've searched high and low for more details on how CRX constructed the little flashlight bit.  I have a Tread coming and would like to make the flashlight bit.

Where I'm confused is the mechanism that makes contact for turning the light on and off.  Some more pics or a diagram would do wonders for my imagination.

Also, a part number for the SMD LED would give me a place to start, especially with respect to size.

Thanks if anyone can help!
