Collector's Edition PST Overview
on: February 01, 2018, 08:40:59 PM
For my first formal post on this forum I thought I'd go ahead and display my full insanity with an overview on the controversial Collector's Edition PST. The PST is one of my all time favorite objects, let alone multi tools, so for this and other reasons that I won't go into, I didn't even hesitate on placing an order. After placing the order, I frantically looked around the web for more details and images trying to answer the many questions I had, which were also apparently questions many people had. In many cases, these questions had corresponding accusations that many people wasted no time to make. For example the whole "They(leatherman) just reused old parts left over from previous production runs". I can, without a doubt, confirm that is not the case. At any rate, I was very curious to see how much was changed/updated from the original design to make these new tools. Here goes..

I'll start with a quick unboxing... I got a SN less than 100! yay

This is the main picture I was hoping to find before I was able to see it for myself. The "serialized" markings appear to be laser etched on the inside of ONE handle. The markings aren't especially pronounced but I like how big they are. You kinda have to tilt it in the light see it fully.

The quality of the packaging is fantastic. I know many people are of the belief that the price of $275 USD is absurd for a PST. I agree with that, but this is not just a PST. The deeper I go into the beautiful packaging and as you will see, into the tool itself, it became quite apparent, at least to me, just how much of a project this new product was. The startup costs for a totally "new" product, starting from almost scratch with respect to new dies, tooling etc. to make this new product for a Limited run, are probably crazy. I'm not surprised the price is so high. They aren't planning on selling millions of these, probably not even tens of thousands. To turn a profit on something like this (almost obsolete product), they might even be gambling with the prices they listed them at. Most if not all the tools in the new PST appear to be of a totally new design/profile compared to the old PSTs and even current production Leathermans.

The first and most apparent case of this theory of newness if you will, are the plier heads. The "USA" stamp proves right of the bat they aren't using the original (or last production from 04) molds or even a modified version of the most similar modern pliers being perhaps the wave before the replaceable cutters were added.

Compared with 04 style PST pliers..

Collector PST...

04 PST...

The most interesting change to me is the radiused outer profile of the plier pivots in the handles. The new PST (left) lacks raised ridge that the old does. I like the new better. Nice and beefy

The tools themselves appear to be of all new profiles compared to old PSTs and current production Leatherman tools. They seem to be much higher quality and certainly more consistent and precise (detent notches lining up etc) than previous versions. I'm really liking that philips driver.

The file is nice and "sharp". Very similar to a Rebar file.

Another really nice small detail. The file is stamped "USA" like the main blade. I can't recall this being done on any other Leatherman as far as the file is concerned.

My one and only complaint is the knife. It's great and all, and I'm sure it will work just fine but it is narrower than older models (from edge to spine). At least it looks like it.. I didn't actually measure..

Ok, one more complaint. The awl isn't very sharp. It has a kind of polished over edge..

The sheath is nice. Perhaps slightly thinner material compared to old sheaths but it's built like a tank the way they used to be. Also notice the lower cutouts towards the top to make grabbing the tool easier (similar to modern leatherman leather sheaths).

Merica!

Also came with this nifty, extremely heavy duty coin thing. (not a pin)

Overall I'm very happy with it. I may even carry and use it. For that much money I would like to get some use out of it, even if that "use" is mostly just showing it off to my buddies, but you know.. out in the real world.

Bonus pic with an original!  :multi:

Interesting point on the plier outer radius. All my PST's except an 03 model has the radius like the new model. I wonder what year they switched ?  I don't see it mentioned in the PST chronology chart.

I think this coincides with the large diameter plier pivot update. My only old pst with the large pliers is also the only one that has that ridge feature. The new pst is still slightly different from the old small diameter versions...

Oh wow, I've just spotted this now - excellent review and first post.  :salute:

The philips looks great - is it all clean steel or has it got a sand blasted tip like all the other off-centre philips etc...?

It's either a combination of sand blast and machined faces or it's a MIM part with machined faces. The texture between the fins has the same texture as other leatherman MIM parts so I'm leaning that way. I suppose there's a small chance that it was forged but I doubt they would make that effort.

Ah, I see, it's only sand blasted in between the fins. The nail nick's in a different spot too.

Thanks for that!

Now THATS an introduction!!

Love the Starret Calipers too! Dial over analog all day!

Glad they spent the time to really ensure quality, can't imagine the uproar had they been shipped like the plus models we've seen.

Welcome to the madness, can't wait to see more of the collection!

Well thank you!

Just for a data point, the almuinum charge plus I got was clean and all blades had good lockup with no wiggle.

Good to hear!! The forum brings out some "cherry-picking" issues, similar to a vehicle forum

If they were going to make small changes, including in things like the size and thickness of things, why not make the handle material slightly thicker and give it rounded edges so you can use the pliers without killing your hands?

As much as I would like to see something like that happen, the handles are probably the most iconic part of the PST. I don't think they'd get away with changing them to much.  That being said, I'm all on board for a PST III!

Impressive write up and overview.
You took care of many wide eye expectations.
Can not believe you actually used it to own a can, cutting paper yeah! But to use the can opener was cool.

I like my Rebars, maybe the closest to a PST I will get.

But now I feel I am better informed about the PST collector version. Well worth the admission.  ;)

Thank you!
I almost always use the knife first on new tools, or the pliers if a good opportunity presents itself. I'll admit I paused for a second before I made the first can cut..almost backed out. Can openers are such underrated tools nowadays on mts so I figured it would make for an interesting christening.

Definitely get a PST if you can find one for a good price.. less than $35 or so. Solid, well rounded tool.

Very nice write-up and pictures.  Sure looks like LM really tried to make the new PST quite special! Love the agressive file, tools, and what looks like perfect fit/finish. Even the ruler markings look perfect!
