My First Mod - Master Fisherman
on: August 24, 2018, 06:14:37 AM
I've had a Climber in the tackle box for years because it's what I had and I didn't give it a lot of thought. Recently I've been itching to get into modding (too many beautiful pics on this forum!) and I figured an upgrade to my fishing SAK would be a good place to start. I got a great deal on a Fisherman off that auction site and decided it'd be nice to have pliers as well (need to bend a hook or whatever). I got another deal on a used Deluxe Tinker to get to work. The Fisherman was pre-hook, and I figured the hook might be useful for a tackle box SAK, so I decided to steal the scissors from the Deluxe Tinker as well as the pliers. I didn't take as many pictures as I could have as the whole process was a big learning experience and took my focus. I managed to mangle most of the bushings and have some pretty ugly peenings, but... I got her done.

And I know...
 :worthless:

So here's what I got. First up, the deconstructed Fisherman. Surprisingly dirty. Did the previous owner bury it at some point?

Next, the Deluxe Tinker partially disassembled. It was in much better condition.

Third, reassembly. I have the Fisherman on the new pin stock and the Deluxe Tinker being held together by my daughter's pony tail rubber bands. They work well.

Last on this post, fully assembled.

Attachments maxed. Here's the last two. First is the peened rivets (the prettier side). The other side is a fair amount worse, including one pin I decided to peen straight to the liner after a hammer mishap. This was the middle pin, so the front scale is still attached to bushings on either side and that seems secure enough. I'll add some glue if that changes.

And then the final thing! Feels good to be done. I'm excited to have a single MT for the tacklebox that should be able to handle just about anything now. I'll have to get a picture of actually using the fish tool on a fish.

This may be my first mod, but it won't be the last. I think I'm hooked. Probably going to throw together a Woodsman from an Explorer and Camper next!

Thanks all!  It was a bit nerve-racking as I damaged bushings and scratched up the liner trying to get the old pins out, but it all worked out in the end and at least I have a functional tool.  I'm hoping that with some experience it'll go a bit smoother the next time...
