Which browser do you use?
on: November 10, 2008, 10:17:20 AM
In light of some of the upgrades and such I've been helping with, such as the new "alox" look of sosakonline, I noticed a fair amount of users are still using IE6 (WHY?!?!) which made me alter the design idea I had because IE6 does not render transparent PNG files correctly... (this is a real shame as we had some really cool ideas working with this) and the pngfix was causing other issues with the design... and this design update is just a stepping stone for a future upgrade, so we don't want to sink too much development time into it.

So, what browsers are your main browsers... and if you are one of the IE6 users, why are you still using such an out of date insecure browser? Why haven't you upgraded yet? I know win2k people cannot get IE7... my wife's machine in Win2k, and she's very happy using Firefox 3.

Here are some links to a bunch of alternatives:
Mozilla Firefox - http://www.mozilla.com/firefox
Opera - http://www.opera.com
Apple Safari - http://www.apple.com/safari
Google Chrome - http://www.google.com/chrome
Internet Explorer upgrade - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

As a designer/implementer it's a big concern that a site works for everyone... the odd thing is that IE6 usually means once you've finished dev for all the other browsers, you need to spend double the dev time putting in IE6 fixes...

I use Mozilla 3 on my home and work pc, and opera mini on my phone. My home pc still has IE6 on it. The upgrade through MS is pita, and I believe this is the reason why most just stick with it.

Works fine for me.  Never had any security or any other issues with IE and it is the browser I have always used.

Personally I've bounced back and forth a number of times in my years on the net... from IE5 to Netscape4 then back to IE6 and then to Firefox 2... I have never gone back since switching to Firefox as IE is always playing catch up these days... and now that I'm in Linux, IE isn't really an option for my everyday browser... I do have a Windows XP test platform that has virtually ALL the versions of IE, as well as Opera, Safari, Chrome, Firefox 2 & 3.

It's ironic how different some pages look. IE7 is a nice step forward from IE6, but still not totally compliant with web standards... IE8 is a huge resource hog apparently... not looking forward to it... I hope it finally adheres to standards as they promised, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have IE6 on the PDA, but installed Opera mobile, and have never used IE since...

IE6 never gave me problems as well, but Mozilla is so much better and IE7 is such a pain to upgrade. I'm sticking with Firefox.

What sort of problem do you have upgrading to IE7? I've never had any problems (unless your windows is not legit...)

My windows is legit, came with the laptop bout 3 years ago. It's just upgrading anything with MS is a pain. Firefox was a breeze to install and use so I never even considered getting the IE7. All of our computers at work have IE7, I've used it and know the interface, yet I've installed Mozilla 3 on my terminal.

Personally since I have to update a number of Windows OSes and some with different languages, I use an offline update program to download and create update CDs/DVDs or even throw it on a memory stick... also useful if you wipe/reinstall frequently. Saves waiting for downloads to finish and all that...

http://www.heise.de/ct/projekte/offlineupdate/download_uk.shtml

It supports multiple versions of windows and office updates... and will create language/OS specific ISO images to burn if you like...

I used to use Autopatcher which is similar but did not have the language ability...

IE7 on my work laptop (can't change it), and Firefox 2.xx on both home laptops.   I need to upgrade to FF 3.0 on both wifey and my laptops.  She has been using safari lately on her laptop, because of her Ipod touch.  The only time we use IE7 at home is to watch netflix movies online, because it won't work with Firefox.

FF3 on my desktop and laptop, FF2 on my U3 Sandisk Cruzer.

I use the IE tab plugin for websites that aren't Firefox friendly.

OK, I changed over to FireFox as soon as I found out how much better it was. Microsoft and its products rub me the wrong way. I use a Win2k machine so I also keep IE6 but rarely use it. I tried running a Linux box a couple years ago but grew tired of it rather quickly. I probably will try again pretty soon.
I have been hearing and wondering about Google Chrome. Anyone here use it or know if it will run on older chip technology? I have Pentium 3 boxes with most of them running around 700 mghz to 1 ghz.

From what I understand, Chrome is a very bad thing.  I have heard some pretty convincing reasons, but darned if I can remember them at the moment...

I've been trying out Chrome for a few months, and I've mostly liked it. I still use IE for finances/sensitive stuff though. Problems with Chrome: Jumpy scrolling, some crashing, not real good with some plug-ins (like whatever plays youtube stuff). I don't know if I'll stay with it, especially if I'm given some good reasons to quit, but I like the user interface quite a bit. Very simple.

I've had excellent luck with Firefox. I've been helping the local music store the past two weeks and they are connected to the net 24/7 with Internet Explorer. Every time IE is used their AVG pro anti-virus and anti-spyware keeps warning of trojans and other nasties. I haven't had a significant bug since I switched to Firefox years ago. It's been the best item I've ever put on my computer.

I've been using Firefox for almost 2 years now and love it. Customizable, solid, secure, and free .... but I would pay a reasonable price for it. There are some sites that don't set up well in FF so I'll use IE for them, and for Windows updates. That's the only times I revert back to IE.
