Here is an article I thought was interesting, especially to those of you who own Barlow knives.

A whole article about Barlow's and not one mention of the John Russell Company.

In the book "American Knives" which is about cutlery in American, author Harold Peterson has figures from old Trading post companies and shippers, and from 1850 to well into the 1880's, the Barlow pattern pocket knife was the most popular knife shipped west. From Cowboys to fright wagon drivers to store keeps, the Barlow was the single most popular knife carried in pocketing pockets from Dodge City to Tombstone to Silver City.

The Barlow knife in it's own way is as iconic to the 1800"s as the Colt Single action army. In fact, I had read an account of a famous Texas ranger, Jack Hays, when he was in a fight with some Comanche's, his lever action rifle jammed and he used the pen blade of his Barlow to get the jammed cartridge out and clear his rifle to keep shooing.

The John Russell company was so successful that the Sheffield England companies even tried flooding the market with under cost knives to drive him out of business. Didn't work, the Russell company is still in business with the Russell-Dexter merger of kitchen and trade cutlery.

Good read, I've never owned one but whenever I hear Barlow knife I think of Tom Sawyer trading a chance to whitewash his aunts fence for a Barlow

I think rough rider should get a mention for allowing a new generation to experience good quality, low cost Barlow Knives.

:)

TC Barlows made by GEC on SFO are in honour of T. Sawyer

Are Rough Rider knives any good? I see them on ebay all the time, sometimes very cheap. But I know exactly zero about them.

Yes they are - you may  get an issue occasionally, but no more than you would get with Case, Buck etc - There is a whole thread on them around here.
