Simple 2 layer Mod 91mm
on: April 14, 2020, 04:30:15 PM
First step in the realm of SAK!

Due to the lock down here as well... Boredom finally got me, giving SAK a spin. This was total alien to me.. so many things to note of and more delicate than the rash cutting on normal MT that I am more used to....

Anyway, here goes.. a baby step, small mod. One of the reason I work on this was because I didn't want to waste the good file.

Handle material was made from.... My wife's Mop wooden stick...  I know.. Its soft wood and wouldn't last.. But hey..that's the only workable material I can find at home at the moment..

Cut by hand.. Glued together with contact cement...

Waiting for the adhesive to set. I intentionally leave it untouch and just slapped on the half of the stick cos I am not sure what I want to do with the scales at that point of time...

Pretty ok-ish I guess... A little torching to give it contrast... I still need lacquer when hardware shops starts to open again ....

What was the original model? What are the backside tools, awl and what ? I don't see anything on SAKwiki with that tool set.

I think it was the handyman. That is a mini scrapper like tool. It's sharpened like a chisel.

That's one major tool/size take down. Scales are nice. I personally won't take down a Handyman to only two layers, but what ever floats your boat.

I understand what you mean. I have a terrible habit of buying broken tools.... The saw and large flathead was broken off.. Pen blade had a major bend upfront, that's why it's so short now.. And it's scaleless.. I had pretty much salvaged those that's usable..  I think I bought it for like $12....

Understood. I'm not a scrap parts or modder (other than making my Tinkers blades clip points). Glad you enjoyed the mod. I've got to find something to relieve the boredom also.

:salute: For me the most headache part was to find something for the scales. Most 91mm have the cut out for the cockscrew which I didn't want. And being a cheapskate I didn't want to spend on buying custom scales either... So the mop stick  would have to do..  :D

Love it! Kind of a dedicated whittling/carving knife, made of woodworking tools. The scales look great.  :tu:

The irony was I had originally wanted to do carving on the scales. Due to the limited tools I have, I at first attempted to cut down half the scales with a larger circular saw on a dremel but realise that wouldn't work as the saw keep getting stuck and I got scared. Then I tried using a hack saw to complete the cut but got tired very soon...  went back to the the circular saw again and realise I can "chisel" out the scales with it. That's why the scales have the final textured look with the pronounced circular marks.  :D :D

Also, how did your wife react when you stole her mop? :P

😂😂 She refused to mop with the shortened pole.. So I had to do it for the time being. She just nags and gives instructions when I was doing it as she have a OCD when it comes to mopping...

Sam, you helped inspire me to repurpose something from the house for scales...
