Challenge +5:

I think everyone is wrapping up the challenge today. I'll still be carrying my beloved 110's, but may rotate in a Benchmade or Spydie as the mood suits me now.

It's hard to come up with some salient 'final' thoughts for this challenge. The 110 is a knife I've grown up with and it feels like an extension of my hand. This challenge didn't alter that perception. While I did use the 110 for small EDC-type tasks, I didn't put it through some of the harder use tasks I thought (or hoped) I might try. As a result, it's hard for me to comment on edge retention and overall durability based just on this challenge.

I sharpened this 110 at the start of the challenge and lightly stropped it a few times during the challenge. It still slices fine magazine paper cleanly and cuts arm hair easily (not exactly 'hair-popping', but definitely hair cutting.).

I think hollow-ground blades have fallen out of fashion to a certain degree. Around here, especially among hunters, hollow grinds are still very popular. I found the slicing ability of the 110 to be excellent. This blade design and geometry just seems to work for cutting tasks. So, the hollow grind gets a thumbs up from me. I'm sure for some tasks a FFG or Scandi grind are preferable, but, given my limited use here, that didn't seem to be an issue for me.

I love the looks and feel of the 110. The weight--often cited as a negative--doen't seem like a real issue to me. Caryy was easy in either a pocket caddy or belt sheath. I use a 'friction sheath' of my own making and never got around to using the standard Buck sheath. That's mostly because pocket carry in a caddy was so convenient.

The 5160 steel did take on some staining, but it was minimal. I should probably try polishing that out as part of the challenge, but I think I'll leave it be since I like a little patina.

My opinion is clearly biased, but this knife proved to be a great companion knife, EDC, and quite handy for the routine tasks of my life. Usually it was 'more knife' than I really needed, but there were a couple times I was glad to have the 3.75" blade. In the end, the 110 clearly has a place in my pocket!  :tu:

+1 Nix.
I started this challenge with reservations as my 110 had been with me for about 6 months.  Have a 55 that I truly love to carry.
I found the 110 was much easier to handle and control than smaller knives. So, I added a 110 aluminum and a 110 LT.
Then ordered Thursday a drop point 112, to arrive today.

Lock backs are a plus for me being ambidextrous.

Plus, this is a retirement gift to me.  I gave my notice a week ago announcing my plans and if all continue as planned 5/11 should be it.

It is no surprise to me why this design has been copied and Buck has had so much success as well.

Enjoyed this thread immensely!

I continue to rock the 110 LT, because I can't think of any reason to change.

zrxoa1,

I want you to complete this challenge at least once. I'm going to do a SOG Power Summer Challenge from June 21 until Sep 22, but I'd be game to do another Buck 110 challenge in October. What do you say?

Or run your own Buck 110 challenge and I'll just cheer from the sidelines......  :tu:

But do it.  :tu:

I would like to add that I dedicate my Buck 110 badges to Nix. :salute:

He made it possible for me to join in and experience the great abilities of the 110.

He also provided me with one of his homemade friction sheaths.
I'm now set to take on any outdoors adventure. Thanks Nix!

Thank you.

The handle is just right, and thought the DP blade will be less intimidating.

Even the bolsters being nickel should not tarnish as the brass.

It took me well over a couple months to pull the trigger.

Congrats on the retirements, guys.

It is interesting to sometimes be so jarred when we learn some of the real conditions behind other members facades here. I'd not necessarily have  known that either of you were of retirement age.

Anyway, this should give both of you more time to post more reviews and conduct more challenges.
