Older Wenger knives
on: November 14, 2008, 10:08:26 PM
While my collection of older Wenger knives is rather small I do have a couple probably from the 1970's. I took a photo to show the blade change comparison. The newer Wenger SAK's have a fatter blade than they did in earlier knives. I am unsure of when the change took place but it feels like the 70's to me. Here are just a few photos.

A Gourmet model?

A comparison shot of the old and new Wenger knife blades.

Lets see some more interesting Wenger photos. :D

I didn't know that Wenger made scissors like that.

Yeah, Wenger has gone through many changes, and are in an almost constant state of evolution.  It's amazing to see some of the changes that are only a few years apart.

Unfortunately, Wenger's factory in Delemont burnt to the ground in 1986, and all of Wenger's records until that time were lost.   :(  As such, other than speculation by some of the extremely knowledgeable members here and in SOSAK, there isn't going to be any way to accurately date Wenger SAKs.

Sorry can't help you date it, but the bail and the old style awl should give some clues. It has some resemblance to Vic officers sak.

Picked up a new toy today. I'm guessing by the picture on the tool that the stange looking one is supposed to be a can opener?

Yeppers, that is an older style Wenger Can Opener. Evidently it was difficult for the common SAK user at the time to figure out how to use it so a large amount of instructions were produced. I have seen no less than 3 different types of paper instructions that are included with the knives. Also the tools themselves usually have a diagram on them of how to use. Here is a photo I posted of 2 different style of them on SAKWicki.com;

<img src="http://www.sakwiki.com/show_image.php?name=Wenger Old Style can openers" />

BTW, if you have not yet noticed the difference in them, the "PAT" markings are on the back side of one of them. The one with the "PAT" on the back also has "ang" next to the "PAT" marking. I have no idea what it means. Any of yall guys have a clue?  :think:

PAT is probably the short for "patent", so ANG should be the short for either "angemeldete" or "angemeldeter".

Yes, I got the Patent part no problem but its the ANG part. What do those words mean or pertain to?

The old style awl and split type can opener should be a clue. But I have no idea. Looks like 1950's to me maybe. :think: BTW, nice Handwerker, does it have the pruner blade? I got one with a keyring dated 1980.
