I'm a bit confused. Is it if we were to choose a single tool for each category for the rest of our lives or a single tool period? If it is the former, the following is my current EDC and I believe it would answer the question.

Custom build Leatherman Charge AL,
Lionsteel Roundhead,
SAK Rambler with Grenadil wood scales.

I haven't provided a locking solution other than the LM because it would be legally problematic to carry. If I were to be legally unencumbered, I'd prefer a fixie to be honest.

If the question was the latter, I would be really hard put to make a list of those 4 categories and then choose one only from among them. They are 4 rather different tools. I can't replace pliers with a knife because they do not replace each other.

In each case it would be the only tool on your person for the rest of your life.

I understand that it is more convenient to have several tools on you and I always carry several different options myself, but for this thread I was just posing the possibility of only carrying one tool for the rest of your life.

You have 3 great choices pomsbz! :like: :tu: :tu:

But if it's only one tool, what's the point of choosing one from each category? Or is it to create a short list? If I had to have a single carry only one tool for the rest of my life, it would probably be, heck, um, I don't know! :) Something custom for certain. Honestly I don't know. The 3 above are used constantly during my day. None of them can replace any of the others for the specific tasks they are being used for.

Heck you know what? I'd keep the Rambler on my keychain, buy a kitchen knife to keep in work, a good box cutter in work (I already have both at home) and carry a small tool bag in my car.  Big step backwards of course.

I was only posing a hypothetical question:

"That if you could only carry one tool on your person for the rest of your life....which would you pick out of each group." (out of each group which one would be the best all-around choice for your normal uses)

If I had to narrow it down between the 4 groups for myself I would carry a Swiss Champ for the rest of my life...I have carried one every day since they first came out and it meets the majority of my needs for an edc tool.

That would not necessarily be the right choice for someone else, but for me it would work.

I almost said the Charge for the same reason as you but I hate pocket/belt carrying it. It's just too heavy, I carry it in my bag instead. I came to my conclusion based on what I really would want to carry not just my requirements list. It's all compromises isn't it?

1.  If you could carry only one knife-based multitool which would it be? Craftsman

2. If you could carry only one plier-based multitool which would it be? Spirit or Wave, depends on if I get a separate knife to carry.

3. If you could carry only one lock blade knife which would it be? Code 4

4. If you could carry only one traditional folder which one would it be? No comment.
brain fart, answer for No4 is Mercator Black Cat.
EDC: Black Talon, Black Cat, Spirit, LD02

It’s just manners to provide a photo.
Sorry about my EDC vs One and Only forever combo ; I would probably go with the “one and only” in any horror world that forced one of each.
I seem to have given my last red Huntsman away, my suggestion to everyone starting out hence I often donate or gift them.
But here is a Silvertech one.
The biggest choice for the keep not carry Multitool is the TTi vs Swisstool. It might sneak into the running.
