That black Arkansas is interesting. I wonder how many stones that were Black Arkansas that I thought were carborundum that I have.   I'm curious about the fineness of black and Arkansas stones--I mostly have synthetic, diamond, then two hard and soft stones. I mostly use a small Case hard for regular resharpening.

How do they compare to Smith's and Norton's? Better performing? Expensive? I have a couple medium grit stones I use for regular sharpening and maintenance, and they work fine. But, always on the lookout for new things to try.

I've only tried this one, but it seems right in line with a Smith's. Never tried a Norton Arkansas stone, but I do like other Norton stones.  I don't remember Dan's being too expensive compared to others, may even have been more affordable. I've also tried 'Best' Arkansas stones and found them to be quite good, too.

Stones seem kinda pricey to me these days, but a good Arkansas stone is worth having, in my opinion. I especially like this small travel size for touch ups.

+1 on having a good Arkansas stone handy . I paid $51 for the set of 4. I have actually had better luck lately sharpening freehand with my stones than using my Sharpmaker . I guess after many years of practice I finally have mastered it  :drink:
