Some comparison between 2 ST300s with very little use, a Blast, a Wave (flat side is diamond coated) and an ST200

In general the peaks of the teeth on the flat face of the file are noticeably smoother than the other model files, especially on the less rough (not double cut) side

The double cut side is marginally better - it looks in the photograph similar to the wave but it just does not work in real life.  The shape, the hardness, the grooves are just not working together well

The teeth on the metal saw side are also pretty small/invisible, especially if you compare them to the teeth of the metal saw of the wave - see picture.

I do not think it has to do with my ST300s, but rather with design  - ST300s are 2010-12 models

Thanks for the pics, dks!

I made a really bad video showing the 300 file vs. the Surge's exchangeable file.
Sorry in advance. I sound like an idiot. I never know what to say when trying to record. The double cut side of the st300 and Surge performed equally well. The single cut side was satisfactory..To me anyway.

I wonder if the production date on yours is indicative of a bad run of files. My 300 is 2014 (much later). The file on it is identical to the file on my 2009 Core. So, I am guessing a bad run possibly, because most people find the Core/300 file just fine for normal light filing work.

Possibly, but it never annoyed me enough to stop using the tool as a whole.

Indeed, the 300 overall is quite impressive. I only moved over to the Surge, because of the bit and blade exchangers.

Thank you, W!
I snuck the video in at work. One of the reasons it seemed rushed. But, the good news is that the 300 file worked just fine.
However, with that being said, the 300 file isn't great by any means. DKS is right about the Blast file being more aggressive, but then again, the blast is one of LM's best tools ever. And it should have been a crime to discontinue it. :)

Funny you should say that... This resonates with my feelings on the ST300 when I bought it, the first thing I noted was the absence of a bit exchanger and replaceable blade :D.

Which is one of the main reasons why I proceeded to build a ST300VX with the bit exchanger and replaceable blade out of a Surge...

Back to the ST300 file: as I've taken it out I have little experience with it, but on renewed inspection it didn't strike me as overly dull. The cross-cut side on the Surge replaceable file is marginally better though...
I have yet to actually use the file on the BO ST300 I've added to my collection more recently, but that too, based on fingertip inspection, does not seem overly dull. I'll try both out when I have time.

DT,
I had completely missed your reply on the 22nd. My apologies.  :ahhh

Thank you!

I had been considering doing that, but the weight of the Surge had slowly stopped bothering me. The idea got shelved for the time being. :)

Back to SOG's files:
What really torques my mind is that SOG STILL SMURFIN PRODUCES THE PowerAssist and PowerLock. Both of which have acceptable files relative to the PA/PAD files.

I actually dun mind the less abrasive file on the Powerpint. It being a really smallish tool, they work really great on nails. Anything rougher I would say it's useless..

I would like a file that can remove metal burrs
If I would use a file for my nails it would be my 58mm SD SAK
But the file on the PAD is a joke
Looking at it closely nothing is done correctly
It’s like the machine they use is not been set up properly
I just can’t see how SOG can be happy with the quality
I compared the file with the one on the LM Supertool
And you notice the quality straight away with the LM
When the challenge is finished I will be looking for a better file

Well, I received a Poweraccess today. another QC failure from SOG. Look at the horrible cut out. I am sure it will break on first use. Like I said before, the people at SOG doesn't care when they are putting things together.

To be fair, good things do come out from China.  It boils down to the individual or department that handles these assembly and QC.

I agree that good things can come from China
I get plenty of good quality items from them

What I mean is that it seems since it now gets made
somewhere else quality is not the same anymore
So why would that be
There has to be someone at SOG that can see
That the quality is not the same anymore
Or is SOG now happy with selling low quality tools
I just see this as cost cutting and producing below grade tools

SOG has made MTs in China for a long time now. The PowerAssist and Lock(both still produced) are fantastic, even made in China. It is only this new stuff they are producing (started with the PowerDuo and PowerPlay).
There isn't really an excuse for the new style MTs being of substantially lower fit/finish/function.
My best guess for complete transistion of SOG producion overseas is around 2006. But, I am not sure, hopefully someone will let us know. :)

I don’t care where it’s made
as long as the tools are quality items
But really we are just talking about one bad tool
Everything else I used so far seems of descent quality :tu:

Thank you for contacting him, W!

I must agree as well. Aside from the file, eveything has performed as advertised.  :)

I like the platform style and design. A little more effort on SOG's part regarding fit/finish would have elevated my opinion greatly.

So far I am really liking the PAD and hope it stays that way
But yes fit and finish could be better but
this is also the case with LMs with misalignment
And poor quality tools and pliers that brake  :tu:
