Welsh Ride Thing.
on: May 03, 2018, 01:18:40 PM
This weekend is the tenth Welsh Ride Thing: http://bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/WelshRideThing/, an annual MTB bikepacking (fashionable off road touring) event that takes place in darkest mid-Wales.  It's a bit like orienteering in that you get a list of grid references, except the organiser doesn't really mind if you to go to any, all or none of the points.  You're free to plan the route as you see fit and there are no prizes* to be won.  Some will just bimble about, stopping at pubs and cafes on the way round, others will be travelling as fast as they can in order to hit all the GRs in the weekend.  The ride starts at lunchtime on Saturday and you're encouraged to find places to wild camp and generally get out and enjoy yourselves.

I'll be riding this year on my gravel bike, carrying a lightweight-ish set of gear to allow me to stay out until Monday morning.  In the process of sorting, weighing and packing it all yesterday I thought you might like to see what I'm taking:

It's a bit of a jumble, but it is well organised, honestly!  Dry weight for the weekend is 6 kg - food and water will be another 2.5 - 3 kg on top of that, and my bike weighs 10 kg

My packing list is here:

I hope to get the bike packed up this afternoon, so I'll get a photo of that up if I can, and will be taking pics of the ride as well.

*There is a raffle at the start, and a competition to see who has the lightest and heaviest bikes. :D

Ha, maybe.  I have made a note of pubs, shops and cafes on my route.  I might stop for a snifter on the way round.

That reminds me, I need to get a bottle of something to go in my hip flask on the way home.

Cor, what a ride.

Started from my Mum's, a bit later than I'd hoped, but the weather was amazing and the trails dry.  Rode the 25 miles to the start of the event, but only stopped once:

Quite a crowd of riders waiting for the off

Bike weigh in was fun, as ever.  Lightest bike was 31lbs, heaviest 132.5lbs! :o  To be fair, that was a MTB + tagalong trailer combo for a father and son.  Hope they had a good weekend.  Mine was 36lbs, which was pretty good.

Rode the first 30 miles with Al:

Some lovely quiet lanes

Wide open moorland

Forestry trails

This was a welcome sight after pushing through a mile of waterlogged logging trails

Yours truly

A lot later in the day

At the top of another smurf climb.  It was 22 deg C and I was overdressed and sweating buckets.  It's supposed to be pissing down.

Even later in the day (after a very nice pint at the bottom of the climb) and a 45 minute ride/push to the top of the Wayfarer pass at 580m, the highest point on the ride.  Got here about 8 pm, and it was understandably deserted.

The view from the top

I bivvied down about a mile below the summit.  Sunset from my camp spot

Supper of kings (whisky just out of shot)

More sunset.  It was smurfing ace.

Day 2 later...

I didn't bother with the tarp as it was forecast to be dry overnight - so I was able to lie in my bag, listening to a podcast, sipping whisky and watching the stars. 8)

Woke about 5.30 - a bit cloudy but lovely nonetheless

Packed up and ready to go about 6.30 (after breakfast of coffee, cous cous and M&Ms :P)

Misty down in the valley

Soon cleared up

First proper climb of the day ahead up the Hirnant Valley - you can just about make out the road going up the middle

Wasn't as bad as it looks, honest.

More lovely lanes descending to Lake Vyrnwy

Filled my bottles at a stream and stopped for more breakfast on the way up to Bwlch y Groes

The view from the top of Bwlch y Groes

Even more lovely lanes

Got back to the finish (after stopping for yet another breakfast, this time at a cafe :D) about lunchtime on Sunday.  Sat around drinking tea, eating cake and chatting with the organiser until about 3 then headed off for the ride back to Mum's.  Stopped for yet another brew on the way back at a lovely quiet spot just south of Hafren forest.

I rode 240km (150 miles) in all, about 1/3 of it off road, and seemingly most of it uphill.  But it was great, and a lovely way to spend a weekend.
