SAK Mods - blades from other brands of knife?
on: May 23, 2018, 08:55:41 PM
I was eBaying today and I came across an INOX german-made pocket knife, and it had a real metal saw. It also had a file. They were, however, separate blades. The metal saw was far thinner, as a saw should be. Seemed like a better idea than the saw blade on the side of the file, which is what Victorinox does.

That has me wondering

A) Whether anyone has ever swapped over tools from an INOX or anything else for that matter.

B) What interesting tools are available on non-swiss folding multitool knives (SAK-type knives)?

Charles.

Charles, for your information:
INOX is not a brandname.
It's short for the French "Inoxydable" which means as much as "Stainless".

If "Inox" is the only marking on the blade, it's probably a Chinese made tool.

Furthermore, I've seen Spyderco blades been placed inside SAKs.

I was looking at knives that have "INOX Solingen Germany" on the blade. Some are branded Barlow, some FES. None so far are terribly interesting. I found an ancient knife with a bunch of different round files and hooks on it, but it had a weird shape and was very worn out. Another with an actual saw blade opposite a file, but that one was also clapped out pretty thoroughly.

That said, I'm open to even tools from Chinese knives, if they're interesting and different and useful. A real wire stripper for instance. Or a small pair of wire cutters, instead of pliers.

Charles.

The Chinese knives usualy come with horrible copies of tools that are found on SAKs.
I, myself, have never seen one with an inovative design.

And the German made folding knives are either for hunting (multi blade) or have got SAK tools too.

One thing they arguably do better than Victorinox is the steel magnifier housing, too bad they don't seem to just drop into Vic knives (not to mention that the Swiss are probably using better actual magnifiers). Hardly innovative, but still nicer than plastic.
