Leather edc pocket slip
on: May 21, 2018, 12:44:04 AM
I have been thinking about adding the fisher bullet pen to my edc. One thing that does is leave me with 4 items in my right front pocket: victorinox pioneer, fenix LD01, burt's bees chapstick, and the space pen. While not excessive, 4 items floating loose in the pocket can be a little much for me.

A long time ago I tried making a pocket slip for the knife, light and chapstick, but I used a leather that was too thin and this made it tough to get items in and out. I decided to have a go at it again, but with thicker leather.

I started with an 8.5" x 11" piece of brown "genuine" leather. I traced out how much bigger I thought it  would need to be based on adding a pen to my old one.

Next, I stitched the bottom angle part. Many edc pocket slips I see elsewhere are flat across the bottom. This never made much sense to me since I've never seen a pocket that has a flat bottom, outside of cargo pants pockets. So, I'm making mine angled. :D

One thing I didn't do, was account for how much the thicker leather would add to the length. As you'll see later, I didn't stitch the bottom far enough across.

The next step was to stitch the dividers. The first one for the pen I messed up and didn't leave quite enough room. We'll come back to that...

At the end, I left the chapstick pocket a little too big, but it may work out OK, since it makes it easier to take out. It's probably my most used item. Need to keep those lips supple!

Also, I ran out of thread before the last stitch run, and the replacement thread I had was slightly thicker and a slightly different color. Oh well.

You can see where I was trying to wet form it with a larger tool trying to stretch the pen slot. That didn't seem to work. So I decided to cut a notch for the pocket clip, which also allows a little looser opening. Still need to stretch it some, but it should work.

Now, I just need to carry it awhile and see if I like it. My initial thoughts are that it's too bulky, but we'll see.

It looks good, but the important thing is if it fits comfortably in your pocket.   :tu:

Yep, comfort is what it hinges on for me.  So far, it seems a bit bulky and odd feeling, but that's only with an hour of it in my pocket.  Too soon to really tell.

Thanks!

After 1 day, it's not too bad. Still feels a bit weird, but I'm gonna give it another day

Been carrying my base EDC in one of these. Pretty confortable and easy to carry.

That looks great. I made one out of an old pair of jeans. I like the fact that it is thin and contours to my leg. It isn't as classy as leather though.

Well, it's a start. Get your hands on some leather and try making another one.

An idea, why not place the pen between the SAK and Light.  On top of the stitch with elastic or?  Hope that makes sense.  I have a small pocket sheath I've made and have considered this option for a light.  Not wanting to add another space which adds width I thought placing the light on top the threads between the tools would be a nicer fit.  I havent tried yet tho.  I was thinking elastic would be a good option.  Nice sheath BTW.

I'm thinking about adding a Fischer Space pen or a telescopic Zebra to the pouch. The elastic would be on one (or both) of the sides. If not in use, I can slid some paracord inside it and make a neck carry or the like.

Yup. Just undo the stitching on one side (or both), insert a loop of elastic band, redo stitching and Robert is your father's brother.
