I have a story...
on: July 11, 2024, 02:11:35 AM
In Dec 2022, my wife retired from nursing and decided to really focus on her new young horse (Forrest).  Forrest is an off the track thoroughbred who just didn't like racing.  Best finish was 5th out of 8.  He came from Claiborne farm in Kentucky.  In Feb 2023, my wife tripped chasing a hawk out of the chicken yard and hurt her knee.

Several visits to to Ortho doc and she was resting, waiting for her arthroscopy.  Over a few weeks, she became more and more achy to the point she was sure the couch was the problem (it was replaced).

Post arthroscopy, she was better for a couple days and then deteriorated to the point where she had to use a cane to walk and needed assistance to get out of a chair.

This went on from Feb to late April. On a Friday morning, it dawned on me what her diagnosis really was.  I thought PMR and that meant she needed steroids right away.  I was determined she would get them by Friday evening.  Luckily the MD covering for her MD could see her.  She ran tests and had a prescription ready to go if the tests confirmed.

Long story short, her tests were wildly positive and ahe started high dose steroids thst evening.  The next morning, she could walk without a cane.

Further work up by the rheumatologist found that it was actually rheumatoid arthritis, not PMR, so meds were adjusted.

So...
Now to the punch line:  my wife was so relieved (she was sure she was dying) she surprised me by ordering a Benchmade Bugout for me as a thank you. :D

And that's how I got this:

That's the really sad bit of the story.  During the time before diagnosis, she literally could do no more than basic ADL's and so Forrest did nothing.
Unfortunately, although better, she was still unable to ride for an additional 6-8 months.  Despite objections, she decided to sell Forrest on to someone who could work him properly and bring out his best.  A very hard decision which I reluctantly agreed to.  :-\

On the upside, she's now starting to look again for a horse, but maybe one who is farther along in his schooling.

First off, I'm glad that Mrs. Whippy is on the mend.  Injuries always suck, especially when they don't follow the recovery path they are supposed to.  And sometimes also when they do!

I'm sorry to hear about Forrest though- oftentimes the ones in our lives that are an extra challenge are also the best companions.  I don't doubt that you guys did what was absolutely the best thing for him, and I am sure he is thriving in his new home.

And that is a super sweet Benchmade!  Your wife has impeccable taste!

Leave the dents as they are- let your belongings show their scars as proudly as you do yours.

Yes.  Uncannily good taste.
Here's a couple tools I poached from her "utility" drawer for my collection:

Well that's a rollercoaster of a story!  :o

Nice knife and all but I'm glad to hear things are improving for Mrs W.

I understand that situation. I hope she finds a ride soon.

Rolling through winter here, lots of coats on coats off, feet care and feed outs.
