That is quite and assortment!  It would have been really nice if you identified the maker and style of each of your beauties.

I always have a hard time telling a Jr from a full size if not side by side. 🤪. You know what I mean :hatsoff:

Impressive number of similar designs.

Cool 😎

I will put up better pictures and descriptions. That was my intent yesterday, but low temperature drove me back inside fairly quickly.

Uh.... Hi.

Is this thing on?

I spend almost all my time over in the Swiss Army Knights forum but thought I would poke my head in here. I could use a little advice. As it turns out, I own a Case Sod Buster Jr.

This knife has some age on it. I got it from my dad when I was a high school kid in the mid 90s. When he gave it to me, it was already old, very used, barely opened or closed, and was really discolored.

It was the first knife I ever "worked" on. I cleaned it, oiled it, and tried to knock at least the top layer of rust/whatever off the blade. I had no idea what kind of knife it was or anything about it. I grew up in a SAK household. My dad carried one (still does) and so did I (still do). I found this knife in the bottom of an old tool box that my dad didn't use any more that was full of old, worn out tools that my dad didn't use any more either.

I lost it for many years - thought it was long gone. But it turns out I have had it for over 25 years now. It even managed to make the move across the country my family and I did in 2021. It was in the bottom of a tool box (like father, like son I guess) and I came across it the other day.

It was stiff again. But I applied a generous helping of the Japanese food safe mineral oil that I use on my SAKs and that got it moving again pretty well. But it could still use a good sharpen. The problem is that this knife is NOT stainless steel, which is what I'm used to being a SAK guy.

I don't know what kind of steel this is or how to sharpen it.

Does anyone know what kind of steel this is likely to be and how I should sharpen it? The knife is at least from the 80s and is possibly older than that. I asked my dad but he doesn't remember when he got it exactly. But he's sure it would have been no later than the 1980s. I've seen some newer Sod Busters that have an "SS" on the tang stamp that indicate that they are stainless steel. Mine does not have that. There's nothing other than a number on the back side (2137).

All my limited sharpening equipment is geared toward stainless steel (i.e. - mostly ceramic!). But I do have a small "Arkansas stone" in a leather BSA slip case that I got when I was in the Scouts and have kept up with all these years.

The knife isn't without an edge. I'm actually surprised just how sharp it actually is. But the edge is inconsistent along the length of the blade and I would like to get it back in good working order.

I really like this knife and it made me very happy to find it again after all these years. It would be nice to give it a new life and carry and use it from time to time.

There are 10 dots between Case XX and USA, and the S's are not rounded. According to what I see at the Shepherd Hills website, that dates the knife to 1980. And the lack of an SS stamp seems to mean it is carbon steel.

I am such a new knife collector that I can't confidently say what carbon steel formulation Case used in 1980.

It should sharpen up just like your SAKs, as the Steel used by CASE could be easily sharpened by a stone off the ground.

Glad you found it, as it is a classic work knife from when you could carry a knife in your pocket and use without to many stares.

Here is some details about the tang stamps on your blade.

If all 10 dots present it is1980, one is removed for each year.  If 8 dots then 1982. Etc.
