Your knife blade will be Chrome Vanadium.  IIRC Case only used two steels, Tru Sharp SS and CV.

Thanks guys!

I’ve learned a lot in just a few replies. So if the blade is chrome vanadium I can sharpen it with the ceramic rods I use on my stainless steel SAK blades?

Also, this knife is apparently two years older than I am!

You can use most methods to get that blade in top shape.  I've used my Spydero Shaprmaker and Lansky Turn box ceramics with very good results.  From what you say the blade might just need a little work rather than a whole regrind.

Enjoy, they are made to work thats for sure.

I can also see myself adding a new one to the knife drawer… or two more… there are different colors!

Yep, multiple color options!
Besides black, there are Yellow, Blue, Red, Orange, and many different Jigged Bone colors from CASE.
Yours is a Jr (37) pattern.  There is also a larger model, a 38 pattern.

Then there are other manufacturers that make is pattern, the results can be a budget buster.

Welcome🤪
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Yes! I’ve seen that there are other knife makers that make this pattern. Most of them seem to be pretty inexpensive…

That means I can have a lot of them, right? Isn’t that how that works?  :D

Just thought I'd post a quick update. After a few passes on some ceramic thingamabob I have in a drawer, I've got my 40+ year old Sodbuster Jr back to paper-slicing sharpness!

I won't claim it's as sharp as this blade is capable of being, but it's good enough for the kinds of things I'll tend to use it for.

Nice picture ^!

Did you pull off the side of the road to get your Soddy to pose?

Great news Marlowe.  The Sod Buster is a really good knife.  Once dull you can get the blade back to working sharp fairly easy.

Well….

I ordered an Imperial not-Sodbuster Jr. (I forget what Imperial calls it) on Amazon today. It was under $10! It’s the one with the black handle. I have to admit that the “dried booger yellow” you see on some traditional knife handles is not a very appealing color to me.

I’ll be interested to compare it to my old Case.

I think you will find the Imperial to be a good knife for its price.

“dried booger yellow”

Not sure why this particular color was so popular?  I actually like it but I also have the black one as well.  Great knife thats for sure.  Simple like an Opinel yet tough as nails.

I have it now and you're absolutely right - this is an excellent knife for under $10. And seems like it's a pretty good knife regardless of price!

My initial impressions are that it compares very well to my 40 year old Case. That is to say, the Imperial looks and feels like it's, more or less, of a similar quality to the Case. The Imperial's handles are slightly thinner than the Case. I wonder if that's still the same if compared to a brand new Case Sodbuster Jr?

Edit - Let me also say that I love how you can open these knives without using the nail nick at all. I wish I could do that with my Recruit or Huntsman!

It is my impression that the Case Sod Busters in the smooth synthetic scales are identical across the decades. The newer versions in bone and other materials may vary ever so slightly😉 And cost more too!

I mean, I might just have to buy myself a new Sodbuster Jr. to put that hypothesis to the test...  :dunno:

For scientific research purposes, of course.  :salute:

Also, blade steel has evolved.
Earlier Soddies had Carbon Steel Blades. Now they offer Surgical Steel SS and Chrome Vanadium Steel CV.

You may need to properly evaluate, purchase 4 sod buster jr models.  Or 6 for better cross section of samples.

That the MTo way🤪
