Swisschamp XLT
on: July 27, 2018, 02:24:14 AM
Is £140 a good price for a new XLT?

I have a sapphire Cybertool 41 (had it for probably 12 years) which I love, and I also have a customised Cybertool Lite (The Beast) whIch HankSolon made for me about 4 years ago (added a 2nd bit driver/case plus the other 4 bits made by Victorinox, as well as changing the scissors for Wenger ones & adding the Wenger spanner, and finishing it all with wooden (ebony I think...) scales.

Kinda fancy the XLT though, not really sure why, but hey ho.  Think it would be fine for carrying...always loved the XXLT & now the XAVT but they aren’t really practical for everyday use, right?!

I use a XLT for EDC. It's a little bit heavy but its ok. Still carriable. At home, in the office or hiking outside, it has never let me down once.

Here in Germany it costs actually 160 €. But the price varies, some weeks ago it was just 130€. Maybe you'll get a better price if you keep watching the market for some time.

The XLT gives you almost unlimited possibilities. Eapecially the bit driver...

I've seen your "Beast" in another thread. Original and really well done! :salute:

If I needed to cover the tool selection of the really large SAKs, I'd prefer to carry multiple knives for easier handling and suck up all the redundancy. (Currently I actually do carry four SAKs at once at work. Each has its strengths and cargo pockets are for a reason :D)

If you don't find it too cumbersome in use, I can see the appeal of having everything in a single package. Not to mention the biggest knives are excellent collector's items and desk toys.

That’s a great looking knife...looks great with that red pouch too!  I didn’t know that a red pouch was available for the XLT...where could I purchase one?

I have just found that the site selling at £140 has a ‘price beater’ offer...I have emailed them to see if they can do better than £124.92...watch this space!!

Alternatively I might wait to see if anyone has one for sale...I have put a request on the appropriate place on this forum, so we’ll see!

Seems like a great price to me Ruth
Swisstool.co.uk - Which usually has pretty good prices - Has it for £165

Hiraethus had one for sale a few days ago - But someone snaffled it ... Before I did !!

The problem I have with the XLT pricing is for three extra layers over the SwissChamp - You over double or treble the price ..... Does not seem right!
Same goes for the WorkChamp vs Hercules - And also the Traveler Lite vs the Traveler

Vic's pricing strategy annoys me a bit sometimes  - Or is it really justified ??

That’s a good point...the XLT gives you:

Bit driver & bits
Pruning blade
Electricians blade
Pharmaceutical spatula

In addition to what’s on the Swisschamp.  Doesn’t sound a lot...but that bit driver is my top tool! 😁. Saying that I do have the Cybertool 41, and ‘the beast’ ...

Cybertool 41 is without:

Pharmaceutical spatula
Electricians blade
Pruning blade
Magnifying glass
Inline Philips screwdriver
Fish scaler/hook disgorger/ruler

The beast’ is without

Small blade
Wood saw
Metal saw/file
Pharmaceutical spatula
Electricians blade
Pruning blade
Chisel
Fine screwdriver

But has a white LED, additional bit driver & 4 additional bits, universal spanner, special multipurpose hook which includes nail file, watch opener (and Wenger pliers instead of Victorinox)

Sorely tempted to get electrician’s blade put on the beast, but not sure it would be practical to do so.

I’ve had a Jones for an XLT for years . I already have a Cybertool 41 ,great tool . I figure that the XLT is about the outside limit for carryable SAK’s .

Best Regards ,

Chris

Had one, played with it for a bit, carried it a few times, stuck it in a drawer.  The hawkbill and sheepsfoot blades are awkwardly positioned with weak springs and the spatula is a joke.  It's a fun gimmick but too big for practical use - for the weight, I'd rather carry a Spirit or Wave.

Thought about ripping it apart for bits and building something useful, but I'd just end up with a Cybertool 41 so I sold it on. :D

Dear all,

I EDC'd a XLT for years.
It still DOES fit in your trouser pocket;
and it gives you a lot of satisfaction.
Only, the lens tends to get lost.
But Victorinox provided me a substitute lens at NO (!) cost.

Note: The XLT fits in a trouser pocket only without sheath.
This makes it vulnerable to the fluffs and humidity that are
present in a trouser pocket. It will deteriorate soon.
But it is worth the noticeable expenditure!

Best, JM_Toolfan
