hack for old gerber multi-pliers
on: November 28, 2008, 04:44:59 PM
I tried to take apart my BO Multi-plier for ease of cleaning, and I was stumped by the perfectly round holes in the pivot screws on the implement side. So, I took a 1/16" dia. wire nail and cut the tip off using hard-wire cutters. Then, I put the new flat end formed by the cut in the hole on top of the screw and hammered away at the nail. What I got is the end got smashed into the screw, enlarging and forming a perfect fit. Then I gripped the nail with another pair of pliers and twisted. It worked! Sorry, but I don't have a working digital camera.

Way to work around a problem :tu:

I don't have any Gerber MTs so I don't even begin to know what kind of pin it has, but good job in getting them out :)

I guess they used to be hex bolts, but then they were worn out to perfect circles, just as this little man is running in.  :ahhh

I think Gerber was using those round nuts for awhile just to be annoying. >:(  What a pain to disassemble.

Those nuts are welded to the handles. You need to focus on unscrewing the other side of the bolt.

Nope, it just spins round and round. The locktight keeps the thing from loosening easily. I finally had to grab hold of it with pliers to get it apart.

A good way to break the Locktight is to jsut hold a soldering iron on the bottom of the bolt for like 3 mins. Melts it right out.
