Champ rescue
on: September 01, 2018, 07:58:32 PM
Hey guys, sorta new here so thought I'd share this older project I did.

I found this old "well-used" Champ at a flea-market for 5 bucks so I knew I had to bring it home.

Most of the tools were froze shut due to corrosion and some mysterious blue gunk, not to mention that the liners were so bent it appeared to have been run over by a truck.
Scissors lost a spring, main blade was broken at the tip, both opener layer tools badly twisted, same for the fluted corkscrew.
Still, this old Champ had potential and I had some spare parts so it was time to bring him out of retirement.

You're doing god's work there, rescuing an old Champ like that! And now it has no fish scaler you say? I bet some folks would prefer a swisschamp minus the scaler layer!

I feel the fish scaler can't really do what it needs to do due to its size and the fact that you risk getting fish scales and guts in the knife. It's a waste of space, and it has no backside tool like every other tool in the SwissChamp, well minus pliers. I don't know why Vic hasn't tried testing the waters with a Champion and SwissChamp with the scaler deleted.

Great job fixing it up!   I can't find SAKs in any condition locally that aren't double eBay prices locally.

I had no qualms about leaving it out. I think the Champ is thick enough without having that poor excuse for a pickle fork there  :P

I'm always on the lookout for old beat up SAKs but run into more old knock-offs than anything. But I'll be waiting

Really great work! :hatsoff:

So you added a hook? Nice. :tu:

Myself, I'm not opposed to the scaler. It has other uses - straightedge, ruler, rangefinder, probe, fork (maybe!), testing the imagination :) - and it's a thin enough layer to not add too much bulk to the knife.

Thanks  :D

I didnt think much of it at the time, but I used the scissor layer from a Fieldmaster to replace the broken scissor on the Champ, and it happened to have the hook.

I still got the older style scissor spring somewhere, waiting to be a part of another project.
