How did the “Improved Trapper” pattern come about?
on: September 04, 2018, 06:22:07 AM
I have an Improved Trapper on the way and am very excited to get it. I would like to know the history of the switch from spey blade to wharncliffe, but google is not helping me this time. I used to have a site with every pattern and the history of them bookmarked, but cannot find it. Thanks!!!

Possibly just a clever name thought by the 1st company that made the variant.

Not an improvement but a variation.

Al : "Women!"

I would like to know the history of the switch from spey blade to wharncliffe

"although the trapper pattern usually has a clip and a spey blade, there are alternatives. Many folks do not find the spey blade all that useful, and Tony Bose has come out with a "Wharncliffe Trapper" pattern, in which the spey blade is replaced with a wharncliffe. (At least I think that Tony (and Reese) were the first; there are a few makers doing these now. I would love to hear about production models of this pattern).

I have to say, I find that Wharncliffe Trapper an extremely handy pattern for everyday tasks, to the point that I always have one in my pocket
."

and also, more on that:

"Tony Bose popularized the blade back when Jim Parker was over Case. Tony would modify the spey blade of the latest trapper he was carrying by grinding it down to a Wharncliffe shape, which was a more useful blade to him for cleaning game. When he started making the Bose Wharncliffe Trapper, he sent some to Parker in trade for damascus billets. Parker TOOK the pattern and started manufacturing them and it's the only Bose pattern that Case makes today without the standard "TB" pattern designation."
My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

SAKs: Bantam, Executive, Ambassador, Minichamp, Classic Alox, Champion, Farmer, Explorer, Swisschamp, Golf Tool, Wenger Champ, EVO 52, Pocket Tool Chest

Way back there was the muskrat pattern, then it was changed by someone to the improved muskrat. In that case it was an advertising game.
In this case i think improved just means a variation of the trapper. Spey blade to Wharncliffe blade.

As Dean has stated in the above post. I agree with most of it. Except the original Schrade Cut Co Improved Muskrat had what they called an Improved Skinning blade and Clip blade. The Improved skinning blade looks a lot like a wharncliffe or sheepfoot blade. The earliest pic I can find of it is in this 1936_Schrade_supplements.pdf1936 Schrade Cut Co Suppliment catalog P.97. This is the Improved Muskrat that Stanley Hawbaker start selling in the late 30's which in the 50's he put his own spin on it and it became the Hawbaker Special. It's my opinion the the Improved Trapper got its roots from the Improved Muskrat.

Good score! I have a GEC 48 Tidioute in Amber bone. I carried a Case yellow Trapper for a number of years back in the 80's and 90's. I much prefer the Wharncliff over the spey blade.
