Using the Sog like a Butterfly knife...
on: November 29, 2008, 08:42:50 PM
Do you guys find yourself using the SOG like a butterfly knife when you are bored, like flipping it open and closed??

Thats one of the reasons I use the sog more than my lm wave.

This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

Yup, all the time.  Gerber gets the credit for "one handed pliers", But a SOG can also be closed one handed easier than a Gerber 8)

I hate when that happens, yet I keep doing it over and over again.  :twak:

When I was reading this article I was thinking that I didn't have the problem with "Knuckle smashing" while opening this tool in the butterfly knife fashion.

So I pulled it out of my drawer (it's not my daily carry) and tried it, sure enough "smack" mild pain, almost every time.

As I practiced I realized that you can actually open it with only slightly less flair, but much less pain:

1: Pull out multitool.
2: Hold tool in hand with the gears pointing away from you.  The tool should be parallel to the ground, grasping only one handle of tool.  The palm of your hand should be pointing down.
3: Drop/flick the lower portion of the tool downward.
4: Rotate your hand so that the palm of your hand is pointing up and lightly flick the tool open further.
5: Grab the other handle and open the pliers the remaining bit.
6: Experience a pain-free opening.

This actually looks almost as slick as the single motion flick knuckle breaker.  Instead you end up with two fluid movements.

It can be done.
