day 29 - not a whole lot to do today. so thought i'd take this chance to remind everyone to drive carefully and if you can, donate blood. locally we're coming close to the period where this season's wine will be ready and that means a lot of irresponsible and dumb decisions

Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob

Nice pics Douglas! Wish I had the patience and skills

Day 30 - last day of the awesome Haunting of the Spirit challenge

I've just been informed that today will be a dreary office day for me, with next to zero probablity of use for the Spirit(s).

This is somewhat less than the spectacular tool-brandishing day I was hoping for...
But: never fear! After due consideration I have decided to mark this special closing day with an

EXTRA INSTALMENT

of the by now world-renowned :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

D_T's [Fill In Day] Morning MT and Coffee Pic TM

Today, featuring for the very first time, not one, but two Spirits in combination not only with a yummy cappuccino (you should really try this, folks, you won't regret it ), but indeed also some unreasonably healthy snack options  :woohoo:

Anyway, coming back to the challenge, my notes after a month of almost incessant use:
General:
- Nice and pocketable tool with a surprising number of useful tools for the size. I'm going to put Spirits in my tool rotation, for sure. The pocket clip on the silver one makes for a nice and unobtrusive extra feature which enhances carry in almost empty pockets ;). However, no stock lanyard attachment possibilities so if you want to use a dangler, you'll have to rig up an improvised lanyard somehow.
- Outside-access tools easily reachable, but not in gloves
- However, prone to being polluted by pocket lint and other assorted gunk
- Known pros and cons to the bit tools being separate from the main tool...
- Not very easily moddable due to fixed pivots

Surprising special tools:
-That chisel is perfect for opening packages, scraping, pencil sharpening, wire stripping and er... chiseling. I had known a similar tool from other Vic offerings, but not this refined, and the inline position is practical.

Surprising positive effects of otherwise known tools and aspects:
- Bottle opener/ large screwdriver: very sturdy execution makes for good use as a small prybar
- The file is surprisingly good and aggressive on softer materials, better than other Vic files I feel. (However, do not attempt to use on ferrous materials, I hear)
- The curved handles make for surprising good ergonomics in plier mode

Surprising iffy effects of otherwise known tools:
- Putting the awl and hook together saves one tool slot, at the detriment of useability of both: hook arm short, awl also short and has no eyelet, so no sewing possible
- The silver one has the butter knife. Whilst this is sharp enough and the serrations useful on stringy or textile materials, the lack of a point is somewhat disturbing and the sharpness of the edge more difficult to maintain (small, round diamond files come in handy here)
- The scissors are sharp but the effective edge is short and the opening angle narrow, which makes repeated cuts necessary for longer stretches and limits the cuttable material thickness

Unsurprising effects of known Vic (Swisstool) build quality, repeated in the Spirit:
- Gorgeous looks, especially after a polish
- Pliers are nice, good grip, and cutters cut well
- Can opener is Vic standard, i.e. in all probability excellent at opening cans, althoug I haven't tried this specific one.
- Nice long and narrow shaft on the Phillips; Phillips also good for smaller screws (#1?)
- Fixed screwdrivers solid (but edge taper makes for sometimes not altogether perfect fit on screw heads)

Unverified items:
- Corkscrew. I have ordered one but this hasn't arrived yet. A bit fiddly to have this as separate item...

Things I missed:
- Modding opportunities, to create Your Perfect Tool. Vic seems to think theirs is perfectly perfect and there is no need to further increase its perfection.
- Lanyard attachment for those that need it
- Pocket clip option (but realised on the silver one ;))
- Hmmmm. Tweezers and toothpick? Needle? Ballpoint pen? OK, not many plier-based multitools have one. Not stock, that is ;) ;)

This concludes my notes and (official) contributions to this fun challenge. Many thanks to styx for setting this up, and to all contributors for pics, uses and insights :hatsoff:  :salute:

Great pic and summary of your challenge.
I would agree on your conclusions except the following two points:

- The hook serves as a stand to keep the awl from folding into the handle too deep. The other tools have that too but only here they added the curve to form a hook.

- A lanyard could be attached here. It's not ideal maybe but well useable  :salute:

Thanks Matt
About the hook, I agree it has a function in keeping the awl reachable... but as a hook it's awkwardly located, thus quite a compromise (and not central, but at a handle end, making the "parcel carrier" aspect a little awkward too)... and a longer still reachable awl would have been equally possible by suitably profiling the tang end...
The lanyard: well yes, you could use the corkscrew support(s). You'll forgive me for not finding that very elegant... One could use both of them to keep the tool balanced, but still  Somehow these solutions are not in keeping with Vic philosophy as I've come to appreciate it. Some kind of lanyard with holding clips fitting the corkscrew holes should be possible... what if... mumble mumble...

Concluding thoughts:

Well, firstly, thanks to Styx for kicking off the challenge.  With this, I have now completed the trifecta of 30 day challenge badges for tools I commonly use: the minimal SAK, 111mm and spirit.  :tu:

As far as the spirit is concerned, what did this challenge show me? Honestly, it more confirmed again what I already knew.  For me, the spirit is the best pliers based multi out there.  After a period of trial and error several years ago, this is what I settled on for reasons we probably all know: build quality, tool density, fit and finish, warranty, etc.

That being said, given my current career path it is unlikely a pliers based multi will ever be an edc item for me.  Its just too big and bulky for how little I need the added capability.  Honestly, most of the time my spirits rarely see any use, as I usually have a dedicated, full-sized tool at hand.  This has effectively relegated the spirit to a back up, emergency use type role for me.

All that being said, it is a supremely capable tool, and one that has won a spot as my only pliers based multi.  :multi:

Day 28
This was a bit of a busy day here painting sealings. The Spirit helped making a cover from a garbage bag, removing loose splinters from a stick so it doesn't end-up in the paint, securing new felt pads for the ladder and tightening a loose screw on an electrical terminal (the N of the lamp was loose  :o )...

Day 30.

The Haunting of the Turnip .......

It's been a fun challenge thank you Styx and it's been good to rely upon the Spirit. I don't need one as EDC but that doesn't mean it hasn't been good carrying one as a choice. And I think it is a much more polished (literally) tool than my LM Wave. With the Plus tools and a corkscrew (with mini screwdriver) it has everything I need.
