Fire making with a multi tool!
on: August 21, 2018, 03:07:41 AM
This multi tool happens to make fire! It's a Coast "Ultimate Pocket Tool and Lighter", model number PT3235. It was sold between 2002 and early 2006, and it's essentially a VERY good copy of a Wenger 85mm swiss army knife, with some minor changes and a butane lighter in one of the handles. It's such a close copy that the other scale clips on with the same 3 raised round clips, just like every other 90s-up Wenger, until Victorinox bought them.

So yeah, I made fire, with a multi tool that makes fire. And gasoline. Because lets face it, I'm at home, it's been pouring for days on end, and... who doesn't like fireballs? :)

Heh, I have to start a new thread to earn a fire making badge. But to make things a little more interesting, Coast also made an Eddie Bauer version, as well as both Coast and Eddie Bauer branded knives that don't have the lighter.  I snagged an Eddie Bauer branded version with a lighter scale, part number EB5235CP. It's just as good as the Coast, and therefore just as good as a Wenger.  Pics below.

Unfortunately all the o-rings in my Eddie Bauer version need to be replaced. I can fill it with butane and it works... but 10 minutes later and all the butane has leaked out.

So yeah, to answer the wick question, that'd be a no. It uses butane, just like a Bic disposable lighter. There's a port at the bottom to refill it, and also adjust the flame.

I also snagged another non-lighter Eddie Bauer knife of the same generation. It has a LED screen and tells the time and temperature, and it also has wenger-style pliers. This is the first one where I can see the quality is less than Wenger. The pliers are thinner and just a poor approximation of Wenger pliers. The pliers in this model are overly polished and have poorly defined teeth. They can't hold anything because of a general lack of teeth. But all the other tools very closely approach Wenger quality.

Also note the scale tool is a micro driver. How cool is that?!

For the last two pics, the top knife is the Eddie Bauer, bottom the Wenger.

Also, for those in the know, you'll see something odd about this particular Eddie Bauer version. It's assembled BACKWARDS. The bottom layer is usually the knife, file, and corkscrew or phillips driver. On this model, it's the top layer. The can and bottle openers have nail nicks on the opposite side, and the can opener doesn't really work well for right-handed use. It's now really a left-handed opener.

Also, this particular knife uses a Victorinox type awl, which is unsharpened.

The lighter makes it a bit wide, but I would not mind. It looks really nice.  :tu:

If I was a smoker, I'd EDC one of these two. I don't consider either lighter knife to be too large. They both fit in the coin pocket of my skinny jeans :)

Also if you want to mess with people, a Wenger scale will pop right on the Coast-branded version, and an Evolution scale can be modded to fit the Eddie Bauer version (the rivets are larger diameter, you'll need to drill the scale larger with a flat-bottomed drill bit, and then glue the scale on).

That thing is cool!

I don't know what I would use it for (since I don't smoke), but for some reason I want one!
Kind regards,

MMR

I'm thinking the Coast version, (with the woodsaw) would make a good addition to a camping kit. I mean, I always pack a large folder or fixed blade, a small pocket knife, and a lighter. Traditionally I've taken my Wenger Handyman, until it broke and then I lost it. (Recently found it again, and will send off for repair one of these days). The Coast version is the same pattern as my handyman, but with a built-in lighter.  So it could replace two parts of my camping kit. Alternatively, it'd be a great knife to keep in a first-aid kit or bug-out bag.

Oh also do note that the blade on this is the same pattern as the swissbuck clip point blade, however it is chisel-ground, and is a combination blade with a section of EXTREMELY small serrations. The blade on the Eddie Bauer knives is also coated in black oxide. Both knives come with heavy-duty cordura (ballistic nylon) sheaths that are really, really nice. Typical of Coast multitools from this era.

Interestingly enough, I recently purchased a brand new, still in the blister-pack "Coast Pocket Tool", PT3210CP. This is the non-lighter version of the same Coast knife. It has blade, driver, file, can opener, phillips backspring, and awl with Victorinox style toothpick and tweezers. On the back of the blisterpack, there's text that reads: "Components from various countries, including Europe. Assembled in China.".  To me, that seems like a confirmation that Coast used Wenger parts to make these knives.
