No shelf queens for me, but I don't abuse my tools either.  A bit of patina (beausage, if you will) tells a story and is to be welcomed.

Collectavitis(that is not the medical terminology) is a curse as much as it is a fun hobby.  :D

Allow me to also add that SS MTs are pretty durable.  While I've seen some tools at the flea market looking worse for wear those were likely abused.  My MTs show use tho I wouldn't classify it as wear and certainty not tear.  My knives ( folders ) do show use on the blades ( scratches, patina, etc ) and my SAKs show the most wear on the scales.  I think with proper use and proper maintenance our tools should age beautifully ( in the eye of the beholder ) that is.

Honestly until I arrived on this forum, I almost never gave it a second thought. I just used the Swiss Army Knife (a now 30 year old Super Tinker) how it should be used. And sometimes I used it how it should never have been used. I just used it. Barely ever even sharpened it.

Not until it got dropped from a height and then mauled by a truck about 5 years ago did my face even tick over it. I put it aside, was gifted a Tinker Deluxe as a replacement, and resumed my habit of use. Within a year i had caused similar, but to a very much smaller degree, damage to the Tinker Deluxe. That was 5 years ago, and I became just a bit more careful with the Deluxe.

Then I came here. Since then, I have expanded my collection by a factor of 12, and am much more careful with any of them than I ever was.

Criminey! What the hell have you awl turned me into?! The Super Tinker used to reside in my pocket, my backpack, or my sock drawer. Now I have a small parts organizer with one SAK in each drawer, I try not to use the BSA metal inlay black Tinker, even though i received it used and scratched, because I know they don't inlay anymore. While I've repaired my Super Tinker, it mostly sits on a small workbench. My Mountaineer is the oldest one I own, though I bought it used, but it's in the organizer. I was distraught when I bent the awl on a brand new Pioneer. The Explorer I got last year, I've come to discover, is an early 80's model, so although I've always wanted one...yep...in a drawer.

I have TWO new in package OG Leatherman Supertools and one such PSTII. They go nowhere. I've always wanted a PST with original leather sheath because they are so damn cool. Well, now I have 3 and I don't want to ruin the sheaths. So...in a drawer.

Except for the Rebar. And the Surge, when I do use it. And the Champion C. When I use them, I don't abuse them, but I don't treat them gingerly either.

Also, I keep a very old and worn Leatherman PSTII in my top drawer at work, along with a nondescript Vic Huntsman. They are for my daily use,  as well as being available for any of our tech's who don't have something handy but need it.

So I guess I'm reverent about certain models and set those aside, but couldn't care less about others and use them as much as needed.

Some of us, here on MT.o, secretly conspire to turn regular MT/knife users into collectors. :assimilate:

It seems counter-intuitive to create collecting-competition, but we do it anyway.

I use but never abuse tools and I maintain them. My pet hate is forced patina.

I guess this was started by my father and further reinforced later with the smallest speck of dirt on your kit rewarding you with a world class bollocking and 50 push ups

I have a selection of tools a vic hiker and spyderco dragonfly for day to day.
A juice I got for a visit to the UK which lives in my car a spyderco salt saver which is permanently in my buoyancy aid  (I do a bit of water sports) a palm equipment rescue knife which is permanently in my river buoyancy aid and a wave.
Oh and a lm squirt which I now rarely carry.

These are tools most bought for a specific purpose to be used hence I don't mind wear n tear.

I would not consider that a collection ☺

I'm not a collector, I'm an accumulator and I use all my knives, some more than others. Sometimes after using one for awhile you find its not what you thought so back in the drawer it goes until I find someone to give it to. That said most of my knives and all my daily users show wear. I take care of them and I don't abuse them but none are so expensive that I am afraid of breaking one.
