Kydex Addition to Leatherman Sleeve
on: October 21, 2018, 12:27:49 AM
I received a metal sheath awhile ago from whatever they call themselves now. I'd like to hope one day they reconcile their relationship here.

Never loved the product, but liked the idea. Really need to EDC a light and didn't want to separate my MT from the light.

As I am still waiting for leatherman to replace the wrong sheath they packaged, I was able to locally source some Kydex.

Decided to split the factory rivets, add in a "flashlight wrap" with .060 Kydex.

I'll carry it for a few weeks and any issues with flexing or breaking and I'll make another with the next larger thickness.

If there's no issues with this one I'll be grinding down what's left of the rivet forks on the inside and dropping a dab of JB weld over them to smooth out the finish and really secure them.

Nicely done :like: :tu:

Is the light held by friction, or by the folded corner at the bottom alone?

How did you deform the Kydex- heat? Never held any in my hands...
Cheers!

Little bit of both! It's held in with friction (as in it won't bounce out) and the folded corner at the bottom stops it from going all the way through

Heat is all it takes, 2 minutes in the oven at 275, rolled it around a 1/2" socket for rough shape

Then made any adjustments with a hair dryer

Almost certain the flashlight wrap is a little looser after a few days. Touched it up today with the hair dryer and good as new! Metal sleeve is starting to weather as well.

Been going strong for a week, it's also fell off twice as I entered cars and no damage either time.

BUT, I'll be switching back to a soft sheath, it's actually faster to use the soft sheath, and it won't ding/scratch things that get bumped.

Also the metal hook is wearing Into my belt.
