Secondary knife.
on: October 31, 2018, 02:42:56 AM
Here's a question.

When out in the woods, hunting, hiking, camping I typically use a fixed blade for most tasks. But I always carry a pocket knife with me as a backup, or to do fine tasks.

Typically this has been a Sak.

More recently when hunting I've been more likely to carry a a forester (111mm). But it really isn't necessary. I'm probably going to change it up this season.

I'm was thinking of trying a few options over a couple days. Only one at a time.

1. an old soldier (1944).
2. A newish pioneer.
3. A GAK.
4. Explorer.

I don't use these for field dressing. And any other maintenance is taken care with with a mult tool. Main use is trimming the odd branch. Maybe cutting some food.

Should I cut one from the list? Or add one?Thoughts either way.?

I should add. I use the old soldier frequently as I carry it almost daily.

I normally carry three blades when I am out in the woods and pre-planned for it. I large fixed blade, small fixed blade, and a Farmer SAK or LM MT.

Out in the woods...my fix blade and 2 SAK in my pockets and a 3rd that is always in my pack. I like a back up.

I'd make it  Farmer or Pioneer Harvester.

Hmm. I have thought of the farmer. I'll have to think about it.

I carry a Farmer unless I'm carrying a small Fiskars saw as well, then I carry a '60's Pioneer.  I think a 1908 or 1951 model Soldier would be a good choice as well.

In my pack I have a folding saw and small hatchet.

I usually have a fixed blade on my belt. And Sak in my pocket. And normally a second fixed blade if I'm going more than a couple miles in the bush.

Sak is a backup knife while in the bush.

Now thinking about it...if I lost the pack by unfortunate events. A Sak with a saw could be very handy.

I'll have to think about this a little.

That's a good point--it's definitely good to have backup tools in the "bush".  I often carry a hatchet on my belt as well as the folding saw in my pack.  A thin extra saw layer on a SAK isn't really going to get in the way.

Exactly.

Sak weighs very little with a lot of utility in a small package.

Another full size axe or saw is probably too much.

I think I'll try;

Old soldier.....just love this knife.
108 GAK.
Huntsman.

Should give me a good idea of what I really need/ want, without brining too much.

My EDC is an S-557.
In the woods, I usually add a big Wenger with a saw.

Nice! I love snow. Between rain and snow, I will take snow. With rain, once you are wet, you’re wet. When snow gets on you, you can always shake it off!

I think a Farmer is a good choice as mentioned already.  Of what you've mentioned and showed I like the idea of trying out options.  Having an awl and saw IMO are great additions.

Well the Saks didn't really get much use this weekend.
In the end. Last minute decision I took with me:

Old Sak solider.
New pioneer
DAK.

Honestly, I didn't really use them much. Though the trip was successful, a fixed blade knife was what did all the work.

No need for the saw. No need for can opener. No need for awl.

I used a Sak twice.
Once while sitting to whittle a stick..to a smaller stick.
And once to open a bag of jerky.

The rest of the trip I just had one riding in my pocket.
