Yes it has. That's probably why I got it as cheap as I did. Winchester axe heads tend to fetch a tidy sum now days. That poll is mushroomed pretty good. Have not decided whether to file it back to true or leave it as it is.

Those look very nice  :tu:

Silly question but are double bitted Axes common over there in the USA?

Double bit Axes seem very rare over here, I don't think I have seen another one anywhere in the UK

Here is a couple axe heads I got last week. Top one is a True Temper Flint Edge Kelly Works and is 10 13/16" bit to bit. The bottom one is a Sager Chemical Axe and is 13 9/16" bit to bit. The Sager is heavily pitted and has seen better days so it will sit in the collection. The True Temper might get rehandled but proably not.

Thanks to David the top one now looks like this  :tu:

Tony double bit axes are common here in the US. The older logging axes like the Puget Sound axe from the Pacific Northwest are getting harder to find. Since the chain saw replaced them years ago and they are not made any longer. They are still used some but not like they once were. Sorry if I mislead you but the axe head I sent you isnt the one in the picture from earlier in this thread. It is one like it same pattern, size and company. It is an older axe head as it has a smooth eye for the handle so more desireable for the collector who likes earlier examples for their collections. Yours has not been sharpened as much as the other so you will get much more use out of it. If you tapped that axe head before you hung it. It rang like a bell like all good axes do.   :)

Some excellent axes chaps. :tu:  I've always like the look (and idea) of a small double bit axe, but as Tony says they were never really used over here so are next to impossible to find.

Gareth those small DBs are in high demand over here and can fetch a pretty penny. I got those two above for decent money but they tend to bring more most of the time. The Norlund saddle cruiser seem to bring the most.   :)

I'd have picked up one of the Marble ones, but they've had some very mixed reviews sadly.  If you can't trust the head not to come flying off, then it's not much use as an axe. :)

"Lanyard" holes on axes are good for hanging them up, especially after oiling, but not good for wrist straps. Wrist straps are about as big a "no no" as you can get on an axe in my opinion. If the axe does slip it'll spin round and bites big chunks out of you - much safer to let it fly mate.

Another thing I just thought of is clearing the immediate area in case either an axe head or the entire axe does break free of it's arc. An easy way to do this is stare intently at the log and as you chop away simply scream "STOP ..... STARING ...... AT ..... ME ....."

A safety exclusion zone will generally form by itself very quickly.
Maniacal laughter can also have the same effect but can impare your aim

Ooh... I do a thing where I pretend I have got the Ax stuck in a log then somersault backward towards a red hot BBQ  :o

Luckily no one had their camera at the time and are too polite to mention it so far  ;)
