I figured out why crime is so prevalent these days

I think the issue is that no one is fighting crime like they used to.  In the 70's and 80's, everyone fought crime.  For example:

Stuntmen fought crime (The Fall Guy)
Truck drivers fought crime (BJ and the Bear)
Vietnam vets convicted of a crime they didn't commit, then turned to soldiers of fortune fought crime (The A Team)
Marine biologists fought crime (Danger Bay, Canadian show)
Scientific/Humanitarian groups fought crime (The Phoenix Foundation that MacGuyver worked for)

And even criminals fought crime!  (The Dukes of Hazzard were moonshiners)

Plus you can't forget the crime fighting stray dog in The Littlest Hobo..... although that may also be just in Canada. :doggy:

If we all put in a little more effort into thwarting drug dealers, kidnappers and bank robbers in our off time at work, we could make the streets safe again!   :pok:

Even corrupt policemen fight crime - when they don't get paid I guess.

I still have a slight admiration for the business character down south who had a sign outside his business saying "Crimes will not be reported. They will be punished". He never had any issues. (According to reports.. :think: )

With the logic here these days though if one actually do take some initiative and fight crime you'd likely end up locked up yourself instead.  :facepalm: With the criminals having added police protection since the 70s it is no wonder petty criminals feel safer to operate.

You forget how crime is also being looked at as the smart way to het ahead these days. Look at the popularity of the hit show "Breaking Bad" making the main characters drug makers and dealers. More TV shows showing that crime can be a 'Robin Hood' kind of benevolent thing to profit from and help others. The end justifies the means. Think that lesson was lost on the milinial generation? That meth dealing is fun and games if you don't get caught?

Can you ever imagine Joe Friday, or Reed and Malloy, or Starsky and Hitch saying "Well, they were drug dealers, but they meant well!"

Our media has made heroes out of criminals.

Surely the media has always made hero's of criminals - all the gangster movies from Godfather to Scarface, The Sopranos, Oceans 11,12,etc blah blah blah etc. And as above, so below, we are run by a bunch of self serving 'respectable' criminals anyway.  :D

Does anyone know fo’ sure that crime has increased?
In NY, it’s 10 times lower than in the late 80’s. once they fixed the lead pipes, etc, people became less violent.

At least in the U.S. crime seems to be down quite a bit. But, with the advent of 24/7 news stations and the internet, we are overloaded with crime reports we would have never heard about before the the 24/7 news and internet.
Tack a trend upwards of unfound paranoia(asa result of bad news overload), it is just perceptively higher. In truth, the internet and gaming has offered outlets for closet sociopaths to live their fantasies instead of going after real people. The ease of that lowers the likelyhood that sociopaths and psychopaths will take it to the real world.
Oh yeah. The fact that sensational bad-news sells like hotcakes embedded with crack also makes everything look worse.

There are several books on the topic,  but I am not going to list any, because of political sensitivities. There are books from both common camps that show similar results.  :)

Yeah, it seems that any uncommon occurrence can seem common, because thanks to media, you hear about it every time it happens. It’s a big world!

Plane crashes are a good example. They seem common because they keep appearing in the news, but they keep appearing in the news because they’re uncommon. Over half a million people are in the air at any time!

Have you noticed though that TV often portrays criminals as smart (and cops not-so-smart), yet when you read about real criminals most of them are pretty stupid.

I spent 17 years working in criminal justice.............overall they just arn't the brighest bulbs in the pack.

I agree that the constant flow of info makes it seem like the world is out of control! But the truth is it kind of always has been. Ever since Cain slew Able murder has never ceased.  Go back and read up on some criminal history and you'll find a whole slew of real life supervillains from the past...

I think the difference is back in the day they didn't have internet, so people didn't read about all the horrible little things going on around them as much.  People were kinder because they weren't as skeptical then. Now everyone is a touch paranoid.
