Identification

Hi everybody, new guy here. Can anyone help me identify this Victorinox, it's being advertised as a Mountaineer, but it does not appear to be one due to the additional backside tools. Thanks.

Most likely a Ranger.  Chisel and screwdriver on the back means it's got a saw and a file.

Correct I'd say. The saw is often overlooked.

 :iagree:

The wood saw it's just not open in the pic, that's all...

However, I'd say that it has two saws and one f them also has a fle. I don't know why people insist on keep calling the metal saw a "file".... , that's just a metal saw that "happens" to also have a dual grit metal file on both sides...

Oh BTW, to the OP:

Welcome to the forum

This is a Mountaineer (I can neither see a light nor an inline philips there, so I'd say this this is not a Lite version), I have one, too.

The Ranger has a saw AND a file, this one seems to lack the saw.

Chisel and fine screwdriver. That means wood saw and metal saw/file.

Definitely Ranger. 5 back tools means at least 5 layers, and you can also see a "gap" between scissors and metal file in the photo, exactly where woodsaw is placed (closed).

Classic thing with the wood saw not being opened, I guess the lack of the nail nick makes it easier to overlook, however I'm still perplexed how one could miss it. Then again as I've said sometimes many people seem to miss tools being bent, scissors not moving, liners being smashed and the like, or I have more stringent standards of good working condition.

Now back to topic, it is indeed most likely a Ranger, but if you're buying do ask for better pics, I've had two knives arrive that looked just fine in the pics, but had aforementioned issues, luckily they were pretty cheap, and even more importantly they got warrantied.

though I'm still waiting for my Matterhorn Plus, they aren't kidding with the 1-3 months in Switzerland, 91mm may have a facility in your country which should be reasonably fast, ask the local importer. My point was that receiving a poor condition knife isn't necessarily a disaster, especially if you're not seeking a collectible.

Well that got kinda long, but I just wanted give some thoughts and tips on buying used from less known sellers.

Thanks everybody. It definitely seems to be a Ranger. I ordered it today and will try to post some better pics when I get it.

I agree that it should have a woodsaw based on the backside tools, but I would think you should still be able to see part of the wood saw even if it's closed.

That you can't see it makes me wonder if it's broken off  :dunno:
