Even had I never heard of a Victorinox or Wenger knife, I think one would be equally well or better suited by a case mini trapper with bottle opener, a kershaw shuffle, a Boker Plus Tech Tool City 2, or keychain variety leatherman tool. All for significantly less money.

That's rather dependant on where you live.

The Tech Tool 2 costs double of a Spartan here.
The LM micra costs about the same as a Spartan...

And this my friends is exactly the reason why Wenger should never have sold out to Victorinox
Having cloned the brand and sacked most of the workers, ........
Why do you say Vic sacked all the workers?
Do you have some evidence for that? ???

After 2005 Wenger operated independently under Vic umbrella - so were in control of their own budgets, products and workforce
In 2013 Vic publicly stated that they were keeping the Delemont plant and all its workforce.
Peter Hug resigned at that time presumably as he saw no role for himself in the new structure

Have you heard that Vic closed the plant since then
Would be hard to imagine a company like Vic with a strong public and moral philosophy doing that
The effect on the Delemont town and economy would be catastrophic

That's not too far off of the ratios here. About 20 USD for a spartan, 30 USD for a Micra,  and about 50 USD new for a boker tech tool 2. 99 USD for this newfangled... thing.

I'm just seeing this thread and have found it to be a good read.

I personally like the looks of the Ellis.  I am a fan of this "pattern" and have blade/caplifter knives from Case (about 1/2 the cost of the Ellis) and from GEC (about the same price tag as the Ellis). I dont often hear people knocking those two brands for their higher prices.  I also have an alox Bantam 👍

That being said, I wouldnt pay $100 for the Ellis.  I also think James Brand might have had a few folks from Gerbers marketing team moonlighting for them on this one

The Ellis, to me, is not in the same ballpark as a SAK so the comparison seems a bit farfetched.  I think its overpriced.  BUT, my most used tools are blades and bottle openers so I would be more than happy to give this one some pocket time....for $30-$40. Its has more modern design than Case, GEC or SAK without being quite as 'modern' looking as many of the knife/caplifter combos from Kershaw and the like.

Maybe I'll be able to score one for a reasonable price on the secondary market sometime in the future and see how it stacks up to my others.

:iagree:
The story I also heard is that the majority of the former Wenger workers are employed by Victorinox, and Vic took them in when Wenger failed financially.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

That jives with the story I heard/read.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

I will pass on the new improved SAK by James Brand. You can buy a Recruit or Bantam Victorinox for far less money and almost have the same thing. The original is the best.
