Help identify old western
on: October 04, 2019, 02:55:51 PM
I grew up from a young age watching westerns especially loving John Wayne and Clint Eastwood films.

There’s one film I remember particularly enjoying as a very small kid and would like to watch again but have no idea what it’s called.

I remember there was an older gunslinger (maybe John Wayne) who was trying to teach a young accomplice to shoot. But after conceding this young accomplice was a terrible shot and beyond teaching instead buys him what looked like (from memory) a large pistol but blew large holes in things like a shot gun. As he figured even the worst shot could not miss with it.

This is all I can remember about the film apart from I enjoyed it very much.

Anyone have any idea on what this film was called if so it would be greatly appreciated.
My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

I thought there was a scene in UNFORGIVEN similar. Sawed of shotgun with stock chopped down.

Then again I am terrible recalling movies and characters unless I have seen several times.

Unforgiven is one of my favourite films.
The film in question is a lot older than that, I am 45 and was 6 on 7 when I saw it and it was probably an old film then.

Maybe it was a more obscure western than I thought as I don’t recall seeing it since.

It could be really old then, as I have another 20 years on you and westerns were a staple subject on TV back then and beyond.  The other movie I thought possible was another Clint Eastwood, OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, iirc he taught an old man (Indian) to shoot.

Was it Rio Bravo with John Wayne , Dean Martin. Didn't he give Dean a scatter gun cause he was to hung over to shoot straight ?

Not Josey Wales, another great film, I can picture my dad laughing when josey spits tobacco on the snake oil sellers white suit.

I will have to check out Rio Bravo, could be it.

The movie you quote is Eldorado, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Can, James Can is a young guy that teams up with Waynes character but can't shoot for crap. So Wayne gets him a very sawed off shotgun to just point and pray. It works, sort of.

Great movie!
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.
