I've been a Leatherman fan for a long time. Leathermans have been my "go-to" multitools since....forever. That has probably changed since I got this Surge.

Now, it's time for me to take some of the blame. In the past I've tolerated some lame grinds from Leatherman. I didn't send them any feed back. I kept my mouth shut. As a result, they've believed the consumer didn't notice or didn't mind their shoddy work. So, I take some responsibility here.  I'll change that today and let Leatherman know that I'm disappointed in their product.   :-[

I still think the LM is better than it's SOG counterparts. I used to be a SOG fan, but they lost me as a customer with the last tool I got from them. However, at this point Vic is the clear leader in the multitool sector in my mind.

Maybe my expectations were too high. I had watched couple of positive YouTube reviews, read a couple of positive reviews on-line, and saw some enthusiasm for the Surge here at MTo. I already had good experience with Charges, a Rebar, and a ST300. So, yes, my expectations were high.

Let's keep this friendly , everyone has their own idea of quality and what their expectations are when getting a new tool.

The challenge hasn't even started yet and look at awl the great conversation we've had.   :D

no I am not talking about the Surge  :tu:
I am saying is that if any company puts tools on their
MTs they should make sure that they work properly
I just don’t like it when I see tools on some MTs
That with a bit more time spent on them could be really good tools
And I don’t think that we should have to make them work properly by
giving the scissors for instance a couple of
taps with a hammer to make them work properly
That should of been done at Q/C before it leaves the factory

So far I am really happy with the Surge
I can’t say anything about the grind on the blade
As I haven’t got a clue what the reason is
I agree. :iagree:
The scissors tolerances are not excusable, as they do impede function. My only gripe was the outcry of poor quality, because of an unattractive PE grind. :ahhh

Let's keep this friendly , everyone has their own idea of quality and what their expectations are when getting a new tool.

Leatherman has always been inconsistent with their blade grinds for whatever reason. I've seen some bad grinds on PST's before.

I will say the grind on Jacks blade is more even than the grind on my Surge  :dunno:
:iagree:
Well said, sir. :salute:

Indeed. Expectations were a bit too high. For less than the cost of the Charge, you get a much larger and arguably more complicated tool. There was a distinct possibility it wouldn't be perfect. :ahhh

:iagree: the challenge is a perfect time
to discuss the Surge and to test the tools
And we all have different ideas of what makes a good tool  :tu:

G-man, I find that comment , apparently directed at me, a bit belittling.

Let me be clear about my view: it's a crap grind. It represents shoddy work. It may be 'good enough' for most tasks, but in my opinion it's not just a cosmetic issue. It will affect performance, to some slight degree, in some tasks, e.g. push cutting and slicing with precision. I've never liked recurved blades for that reason. In addition, recurves don't sharpen as easily or consistently. I purchased the Surge with the expectation of a receiving a straight blade. I got something far short of my expectations. My standards and expectations have not been met. If I received a knife from Case or Gerber of this poor quality, I would return it.

Thanks for sharing your perspective, though.  :hatsoff:

I've decided to return this Surge and drop out of the challenge.

I don't think I can change the way you perceived my statement. I didn't wish to cause you any anger either. I thought we've had these types of discussions before.
If not, then my apologies, Nix. The way I understand and word things isn't typical. I tend to be too direct. It isn't intentionally degrading or insulting. You know well I respect you and what you have to say. Please go back and read everything we've discussed before today. Also, I don't belittle people, as I have too much empathy to embark on such dubious behavior. My crassness isn't intended to be aggressive or belittling.

Thanks, guys, but go ahead and remove me from the list.

The Surge is in the hands of UPS and on it's way back to LM. I've also sent LM an email detailing my concerns and disappointment. Amazon has refunded my purchase (and I went and spent the refund on fishing tackle....).

In all candor, my instinct yesterday, when I received the Surge, was to send it back. However, I really wanted to participate in the challenge. There were some features of the Surge I wanted to try and test. My enthusiasm for the challenge overrode my judgement. I talked myself into using it "as is". Then, the more we talked about it today, the more I realized that sending it back was the right thing for me. In that way, even though the challenge hasn't yet started, I really benefited from it.   :tu:

While I'm sorry to miss the challenge, I feel good about rejecting the Surge and demanding better from Leatherman. We all deserve better in my opinion.

Thanks to you all for your input and perspectives!   :salute:    Hope you guys have fun with the rest of the challenge.   :tu:

That's too bad Jack it would have been fun to have you but like I said I respect your decision.  :salute:

In a a way I benefited from your experience as well in that I finally addressed the scissors on mine not functioning as well as they could. I spend some more time today sharpening them and now they are cutting really well. Soft material still gets  wedged near the back but they will cut fabric really well with using the front 3/4 of the blades now. They also will cut really fine thread with ease as well as thin plastic bags.

Probably best to send the Surge now rather than later being stuck with it

I am sorry to read about your experience and disappointment upon receipt of your BO Surge, Nix.

My SS model’s PE is also ground with the recurve that is more pronounced than my Late model Wave.  Yet, my Charge + is very slight.

The Surge is a tool I have observed many tradesman wearing and utilizing and after observing the last Surge Challenge, I caved and order one to try for myself.  But, it is not a tool I have utilized.  I hope the challenge will teach me to trust for tasks I attempt and will try my best not to compare to the other MTs I do luv.

I do carry a knife for my tasks, a 110, 112, Mora, or a smaller traditional depending on my plans.

A MT’s blade are not my prime slicers, but do use, and the blade grind makes little difference to me, as long as it CUTS.

I will say, if I did not have a Surge when this challenge was announced, I would not have searched for one!  As my ST300 handles my big chores presently.

Now to finalize my sheath selection... ;)
